The biggest contributor to your increase in mileage IMO is the low RPM habit. I changed all my fluids to synthetic and greased the drive line and did not notice any increase in fuel economy. It did drive smoother after doing all that maintenance though. It's certainly worth doing.

Stock 2003 2.7l 4x4 manual. Don't really drive in the city but a ton of lease roads etc. Last hwy trip got 22.6 mpg but my Average is between 17-19 most of the time. I have a lot of idle and stop and go. I make shifts about 2000 to 2500. Running 265-75-16 tires also.

Will be adding an OME lift kit. Will report back with numbers in the next week or two.

I have a '14 base AC, 2.7L, with 15" steel wheels. I commute every day 52 mile to and 52 miles back...75% interstate at 80mph...the other is fairly heavy stop and go traffic. I get combined 24 mpg. Saw others added tire pressure, so here's mine: F = 33psi, R = 36psi.

stock 13 base AC 2.7l auto...long trip I could get 28mpg which is about 90% freeway cruising it at 60, make sure it never went pass 2G rpm and never change throttle position, so driving uphill is a drag only could go 45-50 mph, and let it roll downhill...
around town or about 60% freeway, I could only get 24-25mpg.

No jack rabbit starts. Watch ahead for light changes, etc., and back off the small pedal when necessary. Every time you use the brakes to slow down you are essentially wasting energy provided by your fuel. Ensure your tire pressures are correct. High pressure generally yields better gas mileage, but too high will cost more in tire wear. Narrow tires generally give better gas mileage than wide ones. Is your engine due for a tune-up? I have read negative comments about K&N air filters--too much oil fouls up a sensor. That might be relevant. Your shift points are correct, at least in my experience.

I have a new 2015 2.7L double cab pre-runner, 2.7L. The first tank was 19.4 and the second was 18.7. Both mostly city driving. I would hope it would get a little better city mpg after the engine in broken in.

I'll echo AZ's advice. Stock/near stock Tacomas should yield better MPGs if you're driving sensibly. This is especially true of manual transmission configured vehicles. The only time I'm in the teens for FE is when I spend time in 4x4.

Warm weather and reduced ethanol blends will help restore FE. I'm happy for that. Re the K&N filter there are mixed reviews. The oil type air filters receive worse press than the dry. Personally I wouldn't opt for either. Stick with OEM equipment and replacement parts is my suggestion. Same is true with exhaust systems unless you really do your homework and do your own tuning. Most folks are under the assumption that if they buy a CAI and loud exhaust things will improve. It usually makes matters worse regarding FE and any power gains modest at best but mostly negligible.

With that said owners are welcome to configure their vehicles without our judgment. I like lifts and big tires for instance, both of which diminish FE. But you need to be happy with what you are driving. So sacrificing some FE is probably worth it. I stated my comments because many are swept up by manufacturer's claims which are often inflated or out right lies with regards bolt on performance or snake oil. Optimizing FE is work and sometimes hard work. It is also good, and for me, important work. What's better than driving what you want at the performance and FE levels you desire? Sounds like win-win-win. Hard to achieve but if you do, very satisfying. Good luck on your individual projects!

2004 Tacoma with 2.7L. All stock parts. I drive in the D.C. metro area, and have been keeping a fuel log for about two years now. Getting 19.3 MPG overall, which seems to be in line with what other folks are posting.

Just pulled 25.6mpg on a 60mph sea level trip. 22.9 overall and it's only getting better now that it's warmer.

My previous Taco was standard cab 4wd 5 speed 2.7. Best off road truck I ever owned including the off road model I have now. It did average 21/22 mpg overall but seldom any higher. On trips it could go as high as 24 plus if I kept the speed sane and below 65 mph. Over that, it was 21/22 max. Towing a boat, it was worse then my six. It was a great motor in this lighter truck with a standard. Previously, I had it in 2wd. Solid 25 mpg on trips was not unusual even at higher speeds.

My old commute was like 4 miles, all start and stop with a bunch of redlights. It never got to stay at a constant speed and I would get like 16. Now my commute is much longer and I basically run 40 mph for about 15 miles at a time. My last 6-7 tanks have been 20-21. I get 20-21 highway as well running at 70. Can't really complain. My record is 23 mpg city.

Oh yeah my specs are: 2014 4x4 auto with 2.5 inch lift, 33's, and a bestop soft topper

My Taco is a base access cab and I'm getting 23-23.4 with highway speeds up to 80+MPH and I often use cruise control when going to work. going home is like a NASCAR event. I live on the south side of Atlanta with some hills, not flat but not full of crazy hills either.
Edit note: I have a 4 speed auto trany and 90% HWY.

Just back from a long trip and got 22.6 with cruise set on 60 mph. I think it is the best I did on highway. Mix is around 20-20.5 if I am kind with it.

Do you have a lift or off-road tires? My stocker came in around 25 MPG on highway at approximately the same speeds.
