2006 when starting engine goes to 2000rpm

My 06 4cyl when you start it and especially when it cold it goes to 2000 rpm. Dealer says it to get it up to temp asap. I have always been told that cold starts and excessive rpm is very hard on an engine.... any comments...???...

2000RPM isn't excessive.

My '05 4cyl does the same thing.

4 cyl start up

I just don't like the way it races when it is first started... When the oil is cold and a fast engine means more metal ware. I have been informed that this sop now as per epa reg's to get the engine up to temp asap. I don't know for sure, but I am not happy...

thanks it is nice knowing I am not alone..

yeah I've always wondered the same thing. I always wait a minute or two when I first crank it up anyway.

Its more important to get the oil circulating as quickly as possible. The higher RPM helps the oil pump and the crank get oil flowing. All engines do it.

Either way, starting a engine is the worse thing you can ever do to one.

2,000 RPM isn't racing. It revs up because of the automatic choke.

forgive me if i dont quite say these concepts right...
the RPM's are fine , you likely have a lubed engine within 15 seconds or so(normal day) . The oil is thinner, circulates faster, also modern oil is a far cry better than the 70s or 80s stuff. Youll find the RPM's hanging on the shift to 5th too if you have a manual, its normal. Also when warming up an engine / leaving the driveway, its how you load it up that can bad on the engine... meaning the obvious, dont turn it on and show off its acceleration or pull a big trailer immediately.

The air pump is what causes the higher idlling while the engine is cold. newer vehicles do not have a choke unless it has a carb. its nothing to worry about

It can't be too bad for it, considering they use 0W-20 for oil in the new 2.7's!

Old thread, but previous posts are good reference for my question.

My 07 doesn't rev up when cold much at all and I'm wondering why. Three days ago it was 9 degrees outside; engine temp said 20F and IAT was in the teens before starting the engine. It cold idled at 1300 rpm anyways and that's as high as it ever gets; this seems odd to me considering my 1GR would idle at 1600 cold. Warm idle is typically a stable 650 rpm.

This weekend it's getting new plugs and I'll take a look-see at the throttle body. Any other things to look at?

update edit: nevermind. I pulled four Autolite Double Platinum plugs out of the engine and they were looking pretty bad. With the NGK iridiums in there it went to 1600 rpm first start at 48 degrees outside. I know the other plugs were making its low idle pretty rough so perhaps it was affecting its cold operation too. It did sound like it was spitting a bit but not anymore.
