Know this is old but FWIW, I removed the skid pan and went from the bottom (No way could I reach it from the top ). I might have been able to get it without removing the skid pan but, it was late, I didn't feel like screwing around with it or getting frustrated. It is a surprise for me that Yota would locate the filter there, but I guess the engine design required it.

Next time, I going to use a small catch pan just below the filter. Using the bag, I ended up with a mess.

Still not as bad as some.

The combination of an old sock around the filter and thread-base, plus a plastic bag around it, can stop almost all oil spills - if you can keep it upright when you remove it from the engine.

Well did another oil change yesterday, took one of my old t shirts that i was gona cut up into rags and stuck the whole thing right under there. It soaked up every drop of the oil, then i just threw it away. This will be my new method of changing the filter.

Welcome to TW DGBG! But that's the wrong engine. The 2TR filter has different issues.

I cut a piece of cardboard 6 inches by 10 inches and wedge it up between the filter and the engine block (it will mount between two of the crossmembers and stay in place, curved like a trough). Then unscrew the filter so it drains down the trough and into the pan. Leave it for a while then pull the cardboard. After this, I can easily maneuver the filter down into the pan without spilling one drop. It's super easy.

    I use this
    [IMG]

and a close to 24" ratchet extension. I unscrew the filter slowly until it starts to leak then push the oil pan under it, let it drip, then finish unscrewing by hand and keep upside up until I can drop it in the pan lol

Cut a plastic milk jug open and slide it up beside filter after you have loosened it. Didn't spill a drop.

Forgot to take one. Basically just cut bottom off and then cut a concave shape. The plastic is flexible enough to bend up behind the filter housing. It takes a little extra time to sin off the filter but worth the no spill. Be sure the cap is on tight

No worries. I have a good service department over at Dan Hecht chebby/Toyota. Not to difficult to pull the dipstick out and see clean oil on it. Sorry your service department is not up to your standards.

Cannot deal with the dealership on new trucks but I trust the service dept.
