When I sold my 2006 Ford Focus, it was 1 month short of 8 years old, and had 42,000 miles. My 4 month old Tacoma has 1700 miles. I don't like to drive; therefore I don't.

2700rpm @70mph for a access cab, that sounds way too high.Just got back from a 1000mi trip, crew cab/auto @70, rpms were at 2250,scangauge 23mpg but over 2500rpm thats when it was gulping gas. My old truck one time had some piss poor mpg,but it was maintenance induced, the rear tires were "dragging" Apparently when I changed the rear drum brakes I didnt do a proper adjustment,my uncle told me to jack up the rear tires and with brakes off manually spin the tires, they were binding, not enough to start smoking but enough to cause drag which means more gas to over come it.

the 4cyl taco gets shat mpg if you are thinking 4cyl type mpg's, but in truck mpg's it's just barely ok, get a better engine up front to save in the long run.

might be ready for a tune up, at the least plugs and TB cleaning. maybe even add a can of sea foam to the gas tank and then switch to non-ethanol gas and see if that helps.

factory plugs are cheap and easy to change. cleaning the TB is easy.

there's non-ethanol gas at the corner of Fleur de lis and Harrison

simple things that are easy to try

My 2.4 only does about 20mpg on my drive home from school. That's around 350 miles averaging 70mph or better.

What really hurts mileage is RPM's (along with hard acceleration)

Might not hurt to run some injector cleaner, or just slow down on the interstate a bit.

the 5-speed 2.7 is not exactly geared for highway "cruising". my brothers '13 is a 4x4 AC 2.7L and when he drove me home I noticed the higher rpms. when doing 60-65 he was averaging around 2200+. my 3.4 with the auto sees 2200ish at 70. if your rpms are in the 2700 range then your mpg will definitely suffer. Fast isn't always great if you're just burning fuel.

like others suggested, plugs are a cheap, replace them for under $40. I never changed my gear oil for 60k+ and never saw a difference. Seafoam or another fuel injector cleaner every six months is a good idea (you don't need to run it every fuel-up) due to the additives.

if all else fails have an auto shop check for any codes, or find a local mechanic/friend to check it over.
