late model 2.7 Double CAb Tacoma?

I'm new to the forum. I'm looking to buy a 2007-10 tacoma double cab with a 4 banger on it.. CHeck toyota site and it says they make em but I havent seen any out here in LA.. They do exist right? Only ones I can find have v6 on them...

I just learned something new today ! But would the gas milage really be that different??

 

You'd probably struggle to get 20 in any type of hilly terrain since you would basically be in 4th gear all the time on the freeway. I can't imagine how useless an auto would be.

 

Valid point ! Unless price is substantially higher I would opt for the v6 !

 

Please don't tell my 2011 Pre-Runner 2.7 double cab it's useless! Very acceptable power, adequate towing and yes 23.5 MPG and climbing as more miles are added. Remember V-6 fans, $3,65 a gallon and climbing. The 2.7 is a great engine during the Obama Administration!!!

Typically, the double cab short box is only around 100-150 pounds more weight wise than an access cab standard box. So I don't think it's as bad as some say.

There are also several bolt on mods that will really enhance not only the power of the 2.7 (e.g. headers, intake, exhaust), but also make it even more fuel efficient.

Also, since the double cab short box is 4x2 in either pre-runner or 5 lug versions, it should be similar in weight or lighter than a 2.7 in an access cab/std box in 4x4 I would think (haven't confirmed exactly, however.).

Consider Toyota's of "yesteryear." as well. The 3rd gen 4runner (96-02) offered the 1st gen 2.7 (150/177 compared to the current 2.7 159/180 VVT-i) and that 4runner was similar in weight to the current TAcoma.
Better yet, look at Toyota's of the 80's and early 90's which had the 22RE in a nearly 4000 pound truck with ony 116 HP and 140 TQ. Yes, they were "slow" but they were reliable, fuel efficient, mod-friendly somewhat, and they did the job as long as you weren't towing or towing a lot. The current 2.7 not only has much more power, but with VVT-i a much flatter torque curve.

So I think you'll be fine.

 

The 2.7L will be just fine with DC! Only think I don't like about the 2.7L 5lug DC is the look of those tiny tires and stock ride height. But hell throw Fat Bob's lift kit, 31's and 4.88 gears on it, which all can be had for around $1000, if you shop wisely and you have good looking truck! Granted the truck wont be a beast off road, but you will have a good, reliable truck which seats four people comfortably, gets decent gas mileage and can haul light cargo.

Granted the reason why it has such tiny tires and low gears is to get decent gas mileage. Granted the 2.7L can't haul much. However in my 5lug 2.7L Taco I had TWO atv's in bed and THREE guys in cab and it did 75mph on highway just fine!

I agree! I wouldn't go as far as saying that I could get by with smaller engine, but the 2TR has surprised me in every possible way!

 

sooo.... we all agree the 2.7 in the double cab is useless for any real work right?
