With these newer rigs people have told me you can safely go 100k on a set of plugs, I will probably change mine every 50k to be safe though. Newer motors run so much cleaner than old carbed ones did! My Bronco or Jeep need plugs every 5-10k miles!

P0300 code

Hello everybody
My 06 Tacoma access cab (2tr-fe 2wd) had a high idle whenever I started it up cold, maybe 3000-3500 rpm. The maintenance required light came on a while later and it was running a p0300 code. I thought maybe it was a bad plug, so I changed the plugs today with denso iridium power plugs. There was an immediate difference in the idle...maybe 1000 rpm, but it's idling low now when I come to a stop, 500-600 rpm. I disconnected the battery to try to clear the code but the maintenance read light is still on.

My question is: is this normal? Can anybody help explain what is going on here? I'm not a mechanic so any help is appreciated

Thanks!`

Great write up and pics! I needed a 'special locking extension and socket' to get the plugs out. Otherwise, the socket & plug would slip off the extension. I borrowed it from a buddy, need to get one for the next project!

Hello guys im from california I did my tune up to my 09 tacoma with 55.000 miles replace the plugs iridiun ones i put all back ,before the rpm where 900 now after the tune up,it seen now they are around 400 n 600 and the truck stall ,any help will be very apreciated.
miguel oh whats the difference between this spark plugs SK20HR11 and SK16HR11 ???

SK20HR11 is the correct plug for your 2009 2.7l
The SK16R11 has not been used since 2003.

The SK16R11 is a hotter heat range plug. I don't know what the "H" refers to.

Beyond that, we don't have enough information to offer any help. All we know is that you changed your plugs and now it's not running properly.
Are all of the coil packs seated properly and reconnected?
All of the electrical and hose connections that you had to disconnect to get to the plugs?
This is something that's not going to be easy to troubleshoot on the internet, which is probably why you didn't get any responses Friday night.

Not an unusual problem.

I'll use a standard spark plug socket to remove the plugs since it'll "stick" and draw the plug out, but for reinstallation, I'll start the plug by hand with a piece of fuel line, then torque down with the rubber insert removed from the socket.

i just got a 2008 with 131km(cdn) on it still on originals,no record of them being checked,dealer sez 196km is ok,i just did diff fluid/tranny/&filters.will be checking plugs & rad fluid next.at least now i have a starting point going forward,expect to keep for a while,my santa fe has 265km & still runs great.little service goes long way.

196k km is pushing it.

On the 4 cylinder, the platinum plugs are good for around 100k miles or about 160k km.

6 cylinder uses copper and change intervals are 30k miles or about 50k km.

Just changed my plugs! Truck runs better but I'm throwing an error code now...

Knew I would miss something lol

Error code is: P2441 Secondary Air Injection System Control Valve Stuck Close.

I'm going to go over it all again tonight, but anybody have any ideas of what I might've done? Thinking I missed a vacuum hose or something...

Hose, or a wiring connector.

Check all connectors, even those you didn't disconnect, as they may have been pulled on and become dislodged.

There's no reason to get some super special plug. Just go to the dealer and ask for the proper (Iridium) plug for your engine. You will get the proper size and heat range and you'll see no difference in mileage or performance with the "wiz bang" plug.

I was a long time advocate of anti-seize until I came across this from NGK. Agree or no, be aware of the effects when the plugs are tightened.

Thats a good website for NGK. Denso also has a website www.globaldenso.com/PLUG/ Just click on catalog downloads then click on Spark Plugs Training Manual 2005/2006 (English). This is a 100 page training manual. Page 61 gives notes for installing and removing Iridium plugs. There is no mention of using anti-seize.

I purchsed my plugs from www.RockAuto.com At $5.79 a piece. Even with shipping it beats Advance Auto if you don't mind the wait. You can also search TW for RockAuto to get a discount code to use at checkout.

Brian your pic's of you changing your spark plugs have been helpful. I have a 06' toyota tacoma pre-runner sr5 regular cab, with 2.7L engine. My truck has 87k on it. I bought it used. Am just wondering when I should change plugs for this truck. Feed back would be helpful, thanks.
