Ok my 2001 2.7 has been having a rough idle for a while. I changed plugs, fuel filter and MAF. still there. Now it starts sputtering so bad it will die sometimes. when it starts doin it i try to give it gas and it wont go and i hear this popping noise under the hood when i press the gas pedal. I think its the fuel pump just because it wont go, but wanna be sure befor i go through the trouble. Any advice?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Popping noise? That's different. It could be the pump. It could also be the injectors or wires/coils or headgasket or..............I think you get the picture here.

    How does the oil look?

    Can you test compression?

Is it throwing a code (CEL light on)?

Yes it does have the check engine light on but the last time it was read it was for an 02 sensor and fuel to rich. i guess i should start with the coils then.

You should also replace that sensor. It sonuds like the AFR, which helps govern the fuel/air ratio.

Popping noise is fuel burning in the intake.

Before you start your parts replacing marathon. Check the fuel pressure to rule out the pump. Check your spark plugs to make sure they are good. Look at the plug wires to see if there are any grey "arc marks", if so, replace. Distributor? look for pitting on the rotor, if so, replace. Coil packs have "arc marks", if so, replace. Clean your MAF sensor.

Hopefully it has spit out a code. If you don't find a problem with the rest of the ignition and still have the problem, a cylinder specific code will tell you what fuel injector to suspect. Swap two adjacent injectors to see if the problem moves.

If you find no other problems, check your compression. You might have a burnt valve.

If you just start replacing parts, you will just waste money. You will also be no closer to being a troubleshooter.
