Filled up my first recordable tank today since I bought this truck. 319 miles, 14.2 gallons, about 22.5 mpg. Now I gotta get the ultragauge dialed in.

Believe it or not, I'm stoked. It can only go up from here! Temperature never reached 40F during the whole tank and it's been in the teens every morning for a week, so of course winter gas as well; about 40 miles were at 74 mph; it has the dealer's 5w30 conventional oil in the sump; and it's riding on all terrain tires that roll like sandbags. LOTS of room for improvement.

It's around $60 and made in china, so right on both counts.

And when properly calibrated they are very accurate. It would be much easier if the Tacoma's ECU sent fuel use info to the OBD-2 port. Toyota cheaped out again

BTW topped off the tank today for a trip tomorrow. 171 miles - 7.45 gallons = 23.0 MPG. It was 50/50% city/hwy

Daggum! That makes me want new tires all the more.

I'm starting to notice I can't hide my 2000 rpm shifts like with the big 6. That truck would pace traffic when hypermiling. This one, ehhh not so much hehe

This is just general FYI... I'm assuming you have a manual.

Please don't do this with an automatic trans.

The trans is operated and lubricated by the front pump.
At idle speeds, flow is sufficient only for idle or "crawling" speeds.
Dropping an auto to neutral while rolling downhill is marginally less damaging than flat towing without disconnecting the driveshaft.

SOME vehicles may be flat-towed in neutral. The Tacoma is not one of them.

if you truly want great fuel mileage get really really close behind a semi and draft off him.... it works great... (j/k) although i tried it when i owned my 99 durango (5.9) and well there's a reason i no longer own it... apparrently my reaction time didn't do so hot on that test...

lol, pretty much... i miss that durango... i planned on an sas for it with axles from a ram 2500... (the 11.5in rear aam) and 37's with lockers... no fancy axle shafts but i'm sure i would have been replacing those before too long... coilovers up front... it ended up well traded in on an 07 frontier... ( after the semi incident it was repaired but was problematic... every day... ) and that ended up in a pond a week later... pond 30 on fort stewart... on april fools day... not my best work...

Yup I have a 5 speed. So no worries about toasting my converter

Did a 337.1 mile trip to see Mom, she's 90. Used 13.238 gallons for 25.5 MPG. Speeds between 70-75 MPH, strong headwind going there, moderate tailwind returning. I think winter blend is disappearing. Although we are supposed to get 6 to 10 inches of snow over the weekend. Will winter ever end?

My first nearly all-commute tank finished today. 361.5 miles, 14.692 gallons, so 24.6 mpg. I can live with that.

Now if it would actually be above freezing in the morning and if that blasted afternoon northwest headwind would go away I'd be happier. Oh well, spring is coming one of these years
