Easy enough to drive without power steering, and I have up to 3 full on emergency stops before the power brakes runs out, but the brakes still work after that, but i never see that.

    This.

I've done it a few times, but only when there are no other cars around.

One of the biggest advantages of driving a manual trans is being able to coast in N. I don't care what the law says, I coast in N all the time. I would love to see them prove I was in N.

If putting the truck into 5th @ a low speed potentially saves gas, you would pay out those savings when putting in a new transmission.

its actually an art if you ask me. You have to determine over time if you save more gas from keeping more momentum when your in neutral, or if leaving it in gear will save you more. If you know your coming to a stop you obviously gear down, but theres a few stretches on my way home I can coast for over a min and its better to use neutral then to gear down.
Im crazy about MPG though and do it religiously, so thats my opinion. When Im on my game I easily get 26.5-26.75mpg american out of a full tank. Can almost him 800kms before a fillup even when I stop at the first click

Yup. The 3 roads that lead to my neighborhood all have nice hills, so I can coast 1-1.5 miles all the way up to the stop sign at the end of my street.

reason why you cant coast while travelling on a downgrade on a highway is for saftey reasons only. If you have to make a sudden manuver to avoid and obstacle or accident most would not shift back into gear due to immediate stress. Also for big rigs it would be extreemely difficult to find a gear if their airbrakes were lost while on a donwgrade.

only way they would prove it is if you were involved in a serious personal injury accident or a fatal accident. The accident reconstrutionist could note that your vehicle was in neutral instead of a forward gear-could make a difference in a law suit or a criminal charge-rare but can happen.

I completely agree with your statement about big rigs. But we're talking about Tacoma's...it's easy to find the right gear in our trucks.

I still don't get it. Why don't you just take yer foot off the gas and coast down hill in gear?

We do use engine braking a lot. But there are many instances where engine braking is not advantageous. You travel a lot farther when coasting in neutral, so even though engine braking gives you better fuel economy at that instant, you cannot engine brake for an extended period of time without losing speed. Coasting in neutral still nets excellent fuel economy, and you can do it for a much longer amount of time.
