4.88s at 70mph im at about 2800 rpms. keeping it below 3k on the rpms i get 20mpg.

edit: it may be 75mph, not 70.

I'm running 4.88's with 33's(255/85/16), and I feel that it is just about right. Keep in mind I drive mostly 55-60 on county highways. I am actually looking into getting 34X10.50X16 Swamper LTB's here soon.

Jeep and Toyota are completely different when it comes to gearing. Toyota has 4.10 gears stock and Jeeps have 3.73 or 3.23 (the new ones, besides the Rubicon) and I remember the older ones being the same. That makes your 4.88 more that 2 steps up like it will be in the Tacoma. It's comparing apples to oranges.

My 85 had 5.71 gears in it and wasn't intolerable on the highway. Kinda of red apples to green apples comparison, but the on-road noise was worth the off-road prowess. That thing was awesome in the dirt.

It also depends on transmission type.

Manuals usually run great with 4.56s and 33s

Auto Trannys usually run great with 4.88s and 33s

So make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Someone could be talking how great there 4.88s and 33s with an auto tranny but if you have a manual you probably need 4.56s with 33s for an equivalent.

especk.....you like the 4.88 gearing? Im looking to regear i have 285/75/r16s not really doing off roading but i talked to nitro gears and cause i have the 4 cyl he said to use the 4.88 over the 4.56 just like toyota used the 4.10 over the 3.79 of the 6 cyl. plus don't have to buy a new carrier so cheaper to install....seem logical?

I previously asked especk the same question. IIRC He said he was real happy with 4.88 and even wished for 5.30 when off-pavement, but was overall happy with the choice.

I'm on my third tank of gas since going to 4.88. I'm pretty happy with the overall feel, but the faster spinning driveshaft has accentuated my driveshaft vibes, which were barely noticeable before.

I rationalized the purchase by saying it was going to help my stop-and-go gas mileage - which it has NOT done.

Finally, uncalibrated speedo with 4.88 felt pretty weird. Felt much worse than the oversize tires on stock gearing, though it's really not that much more different, just in the opposite direction. I was much happier after installing my hypertech speedometer calibrator and getting the speedo and odometer back to dead-on.

The 4.88s are perfect for me. 4.56s would be better if you do a lot of highway driving

I have read many post on this forum looking for the next question and can not find a clear answer for me, I hope you can help me:

    Year: 2006
Model: Regular Cab 4x4 2.7L manual
    Gear: stock 4.10
Shocks: 2.5 lift with Blistein 5100
285/70R17. Maxxis Bighorn M / T, I really like the look but it affects my pocket

to change my tires increase gas mileage and decrease my speed obviously for bigger tires, I know I need to re-gear, but what is the best if you want better road performance and fuel economy in the city? 4.88 4.56? dunes, off road, highway, city are my applications ..

Or return to the 245/65R16 for optimum benefit offered by the tacoma?

or change to 265/70R17 to handle the same 4.10 gear will give me better results or similar cost and performance?

Many questions, thank you for your comments,

OK - every modification is a compromise right? In the case of suspension lift and tire size/tread design, you're trading off acceleration and gas mileage against improved off road performance.

It sounds like your existing mix isn't working for you. You want to go back a bit towards stock to regain some economy and acceleration.

My personal experience is that regearing won't regain you back any gas mileage. I suggest leaving your gears alone. Instead, here's what I'd recommend:

    1. Keep using your existing tires until they wear out. No change will regain the money lost in throwing away perfectly good parts.

    2. When you are ready for new tires, downgrade in size and weight - go back to a "stock" equivalent size: 265/65R17, in an AT tire such as BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA, or even the new BF Goodrich "Rugged Terrain" tire. 265/65R17 is the same size that comes on the TRD sport, but is still larger than the 245/75R16 donuts that come on the 4x4 regular cabs.

    3. The smaller tire will look a little out of place with your existing suspension lift - so pull your coilovers out and reset the 5100s from 2.5" of lift down to 1.75" of lift. And the lower height will probably also help just a bit with MPGs.

That'll leave you with more off-road capability than out-of-box stock but a little more economical to operate.

bjmoose thanks, your advice makes sense to me .... I like the idea of leaving all the original parts ... I will change for the 265 when finished with 285 and 1 inch down.

After reading this I think I'm gonna go with 4.56's rather than 4.88's.

My truck is my daily driver and weekend off road warrior. I have 32's and driving on the highway sucks because of the need to constantly downshift to keep 70mph up any sort of hill. I plan on going up to 33's once my tires wear out. In 4 low my truck will go up steep hills just fine, though I wish I could use 4 high more but sometimes it just doesn't cut it. You guys who already re-geared do you think the 4.56's will help me both on and off road? Or should I go with 4.88's?

Ultimately, there's not *that* big a difference between 4.56 and 4.88.

Assuming a 4 cylinder (We ARE in the 4 banger forum here, but folks tend to come in off the home page and not notice)

    For 32" tires - I'd go 4.56.

I'd also go with 4.56 with 33" tires for a "pavement queen" that spent most of its time at freeway speeds.

For 33" tires - I'd still go 4.88 for well rounded usage of the truck on and off road including highway miles, but not *exclusively* highway miles.

With 33" tires and 4.88 gears, when I'm at 70 mph, my tach says 2800 rpm. My speedo is corrected - so those numbers are dead on.

    Hope this helps.
