Yes, that fact has been established for the 6cyl but for the 4's from what I've read it is more complicated. The 09-11's are not plug and play even if you have the correct year. I'm not sure if the 05-08's with 4cyl are plug and play assuming the correct year of console.

So the 09-11 console is plug and play in the 4 cyl 09-11 trucks? If that's so, then that is good news.

I did it to a friends Tacoma - just bought one of these Gentex autodimming mirrors with a temp and compass readout in it. Was quite easy and there is a lot of threads on it.

I installed the TelTek Informer 1 Glow in my truck last week. I ran the wire through the firewall and attached the sensor to the from grill work down low. Per the owner/designer at TelTek, the sensor is completely waterproof, mudproof, etc. It just needs good airflow and should not be put right in front of the radiator (where the factory-mounted temp. sensor is mounted). Anyway, I followed his instructions and it works great. It runs off 1 AA battery (saving me wiring it), which should last 10-12 months. It is backlit and is very, very visible in the dark. I velcroed the mounting bracket to the dash, like an Ultragauge or Scangauge.

Works like a charm so far, and way, way cheaper than doing a retrofit with factory parts.

Forgive the crappy iPhone image. My finger got in the way.

I have taken a 2010 trd console from a person I asked permission and tried to plug mine in with existing wiring and I got dashes for temp. This makes sense given the single pin output and different A/C amplifiers. Still I don't not think someone has taken an '09+ console and ran the 2 pins to a second sensor. I would expect it not to work though given the 09+ console reads from single pin.

Did you also swap the temp sensor that's behind the grill on the vertical support?

Thanks for providing some input on this but I'm a bit confused with your second sentence.

Are you saying that you suspect that with a 2009-2011 4cyl truck, if you took a 2009-2011 overhead console and ran wires to a second 2009-2011 6cyl sensor installed in the front then it would work?

This is what i suspect would NOT work because the newer console only uses one wire from the AC circuit for temp. I am assuming here that the circuity in the newer console isn't designed to handle 2 wires as the older one is. However I would like to know if tried would it actually work.

To the person who asked about swapping sensors, no because they were the same part #. My truck is wired the same as the V6 was in that area.

On a side note: I hope the mirror I am seeing in the 2012 is somewhat useable in all models. I like this option better as I already have a backup camera in my current one and this is probably a cheaper option.

This is what I am hoping for as well. If it's a typical Gentex mirror then all you will need is a power source and run two wires up to a sensor at the front. I think the sensor will be a separate sensor and not rigged up to the existing Tacoma wiring. The only worry I have is if it will be compatible with the 2009-2011 backup camera.

As it being cheaper I think it will likely be more expensive. I've done a lot of research and the closest mirror you can currently purchase is the Gentex 50-GENK3345 which does not have the temp gauge and they want $659 for it. More details in the link below - scan to near the bottom of the page.

And that still is less then finding a console or buying one to still have to mess with it. Mirror is a much cleaner option plus I'm pretty sure you could offload the old mirror to those looking to add the camera.

Not sure if anyone noticed this on the following thread but they discuss the wiring of the 2012 mirror in this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/189745-got-my-2012-a-2.html

    Member "Buff" posted the following.

There are two rows of 7 wire holes on the connector.
Looking at the connector from wire side with squeeze tab down I will list the holes starting as "1" in top left and "14" bottom right.

    1-Red
    5-Yellow
    6-Black taped?
    7-Black with single silver dot
    8-Green
    9-White w/dark line
    10-Red
    13-White
    14-Red

I could not notice any difference between the reds. 9 wires in total.

So how do these match up with the 2010's? If anyone pulls the console to check before I do......

Looks like it has the same harness but the wiring might be different? (taken from previously mentioned thread).

"so far, the front where the connector clip wiring is correct.

Had a look at a 2012 today (in the lot) and:

    • the camera at the back looks to be exactly the same as the 2009-2011's
    • as well as the sensor installed at the front of the truckbehind the grill also looks to be the same as the 2009-2011's
So the camera might work OK with the new mirror. Just need to get a part number for the mirror and see how much it costs.

So you say that you did not install / swap the sensor over? You said the wiring is the same, but without the temp sensor then I dont know why you would expect anything other than dashes for the temp. The signal has to come from something. The fact that it got dashes is a good sign in my book, maybe it just needed the sensor.
