Ok, my son roached the 22RE on his 94 taco. I found a 2rz (2.4liter) longblock out of a 1998 taco. Anyone know if this engine swap will work. The new engine does not have a distributor, but the plug is in where one goes. Also the new engine is OBD II and the old one is OBD I I think. Does anyone know if this is an easy swap or not? Also the new engine does not have the fuel injectors or intake exhaust manifold on it, but it looks pretty much the same as the old motor, so I am thinking that is not a problem, just wondering about the distributor and OBD II thing?

It will be a lot of work. The engine will not bolt right up to the transmission, the exhaust is on the opposite side, you need all the computer etc out of the 2RZ, you need to have all new power steering hoses made, AC adapters, etc.

What you call the 94 Tacoma is actually pre-tacoma. The 22RE was never in the Tacoma, it was in the Hilux/Pickup.

For people who have done the 3RZ and 2RZ swaps look here:

Thanks man. I know my 94 was not a taco, but seems like nobody outside the taco world knows what a hilux is. I did figure out that 1985-1995 22re's are all interchangeable with my 94 today. Damn, that 98 was a good deal. $450 and only 43k miles. Bummer. I have a buddy with an 87 that might part with his motor though. He has 110k on it. (2wd) Take care, and thanks again for letting me know. I was worried as the 98 has no distributor and the 94 does.

if your gonna do an engine swap, might think about doing a v6 swap, people have done a bunch of 5VZ swaps.
