I live along the front range of rockies, all of my in town/interstate to denver trips are at ~5200 ft. It's not fun. The interstate is pretty flat but there are definitely some long inclines. No way can I maintain 75mph by the top unless i hit it going 85 and floor it. If someone pulls out infront of me and I lose monentum I have to drop it in to 4th. I'm not even lifted yet and this was my experience with how she was stock with 245/75s an how she is now with camper shell and 265/75s.

At the ski resorts, going from 5200ft to 10,000 feet... Honestly, it's miserable. At that elevation i probably have about 100 horsepower according to online calculators of power loss above sea level. It's miserable and feels like i'm torturing the truck. I'm okay with it though as I go up there once a year. Still sad to drive on interstate tho and have to throw it in 4th. I'd almost prefer an automatic even if it was indecisive about what gear to be in- at least it'd do it for me.

Fink- there's some thread on using wd40 to remove plastidip with ease. I haven't tried it, will only try and remove if i find an amazing wheel paint and want to suffer through that entire process (done it before on other cars), or if I sell the truck (never). So yea, i'll probably keep the dip on forever and touch up if needed when its warmer out. Thx for compliments

Heh, the trek from Vail to the Eisenhower tunnel, I guess all that's around 10,000 or so feet, but yea.. speed limit is 60, I have to be in 3rd for 5 minutes at a time to go 45  I can't really feel bad about doing it to the engine, because the alternative is being in 4th and losing speed constantly until I hear the engine lugging. I just wish at times that I had an automatic so i could set cruise control and let IT take care of the things that make me uncomfortable.

I drove mine up there with a full bed of gear 2 weeks ago, I only hit 5th on some down hills, to go the speed limit or pass I was in 3rd.

Yeah. I'm sure they're much more enjoyable at sea level. I drove up to Laramie WY today for fun, on highway 287 (dunno if you've ever done the drive Hagen), but I didn't know it was so hilly. I was in 4th in the slow lane on all the hills, and even then I was still losing a good amount of speed. Even 5th gear at 65, on a very slight downhill, I swear I was losing speed! Bah!

I did get some ethanol free gas while in WY for good measure ;) Cheap as hell up there, like 2.59/gal.

Interesting.
I've made two trips to Austin from LA with mine.
2nd trip home went via Carlsbad and Albuquerque, through Flagstaff/Kingman.

Never once felt that the truck was lacking in power. Maintained speed no problem.

You got that high?

Highest I hit was $4.68 last October.

Ahh... For some reason I thought you were "employed" there.

Most people I've met from Oceanside were in some way tied in with the base.

A couple times in the last few years, gas was over $5 in Chicago. Not all grades of gas was $5, just the premium grade. I live 45 miles from downtown Chicago and usually pay 25 - 30 cents less. If I travel another hour west on I-80, gas is about 25 - 30 cents less than what I pay.

I did a little calculating of HP loss at altitude using this link

I found some map of ambient barometric pressure for CO, specifically the ski resort area here and converted to the requested format on the first link using this converter, here.

At 20* F, ambient barometric pressure of '30.2092923 inches HG', 10% humidity, and at 10,000 ft above sea level, it told me:

"Calculated Relative Horsepower To Rated: 72.0%", or 114.48 horsepower to the crank  Obviously all cars will suffer in these conditions, but folks that frequent higher elevations or permanently reside there may want to take this in to consideration.

Unfortunately, the mountain passes are still extremely hilly, so you're fighting some massive hills while being seriously down on power, and with additional drive train loss. I've found drive train loss results on tacomaworld searches ranging from 12% (one person) to mentions of closer to 20% (several results). If we split it down the middle at 16%, we get 96hp to the wheels

Even on the front range, where most people live in CO, we're at about a mile in elevation. This would yield ~130hp to the crank in summer, or about 135hp in the winter - about 110hp/112hp to the wheels.

I double checked these values using another calculator that has less parameters (just rated BHP and elevation in feet) and had similar results. I'm sure these trucks are awesome at sea level, but up here they're not so enjoyable to drive. Obviously we didn't buy 4x4 4cyl trucks to go fast, but with the weight of the truck, wind resistance, and especially if you lift it and put bigger tires....

IN SHORT:
