 I have a 2000 4 cyl motor that had a rubber expanding oil plug. The wings broke off inside the oil pan,(from overtightening I suppose). A mechanic I called said he see's foreign objects in pans all the time, and it is nothing to worry about because the oil pump has a screen. Is there any danger of these pieces damaging the motor?

No. Try placing a magnet on the pan. It will help keep it in one spot. But it shouldn't move much.

Good Idea. Found some small powerful magnets that should work fine.

It would be pretty easy to pull off the pan, clean it, and reassemble.
