Then I'll think of it as a 4 gallon reserve tank.

so 2.63 gallons left when I'm on 1/8 tank

and why aren't those 4.1 gallons usable?

Only thing I like about the ford ranger was how the clutch was and how it popped into gear. Never drove it long distance though just moved the truck for a guy at work. Not a huge fan of my 2nd gen but its got 95 000 km on it and I'm the second owner.

I get 600 km out of a tank, 370 miles, and I've got a leveled 4x4 AC with 265/75/16s and get usually around 21 mpg

    35, all 5 tires.

Bought the truck last December and the TPMS has never worked.
    If I had a 4x4 I'd install the ARB TPMS-delete, but it wouldn't work on a 5-lug.

At least 20 gallons are "usable", but you're going to be riding "E" by the time you're down to 3 gallons left. Somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 gallon is not usable at all... but by the time you're below 1 gallon all it might take is a driveway to uncover the pickup and stall the engine.

The light comes on at about 4 gallons left, but the gauge isn't quite on "E" at that point.

I'm thinking light comes on with 5 gallons left. my light came on when I left work and it's exactly 40.1 miles from that time to when I got to the gas station and it took 18.3 gallons.

    And mine took 16.958 gallons.
I had driven about a mile from when the light came on, so I hadn't used much more than around 5 or 6 ounces of fuel.

But again... the needle and the light are gauges, not meters.
Most are reporting that the light comes on at "about" 17 gallons, which was right for mine... yet we had one guy who had his light come on, drove another 60 miles, put 21.1 gallons in the tank... and he insists that he stuffed 2.2 gallons in the filler neck (physically impossible, the neck MIGHT hold 1/2 gallon), rather than accepting the fact that the gas station fucked him.

Which is why I was always told not to let the gas tank dip below 1/4 of a gallon.

This seems like a ludicrous idea to me. I have 4 gallons that I can't- or shouldn't- use.

kinda like certain banks with two initials.. have to keep $100 minimum balance or if you dip under they charge you a $15 service fee.

who says you can't use that 4 gallons!? I'm going for it this week, I'm at 340 miles with an 1/8 tank to go :p

my s10 would puke out of the filler neck if you tried to fit a half of a gallon in it after the nozzle clicked off lol

nj- Me too. Trying to make it to Friday and have a half a tank left. I may just be using those 4 extra gallons.

My father once overfilled his Isuzu Trooper and the fire department showed up. There were gas fumes coming out of the truck.

I'm just saying that the neck itself can't physically hold more than 1/2 gallon.

It may very well be the case that the neck it fairly full when the pump clicks off.
Personally, pump clicks, I wait a couple of seconds, hit it again and it clicks after putting in maybe another tenth or two... definitely no more than .25

Could I perhaps go to super slow speed and squeeze in a half gallon by running right up to the flapper? Probably... but I like not having to replace my charcoal canister to clear a CEL.

Those who claim over a gallon after the pump clicks off must be filling at some pretty high-speed stations that's causing a lot of foaming (not common with gasoline).
My Duramax was a horrible foamer with my aftermarket 55 gallon tank.

never said the filler next couldn't or doesn't hold a gallon just sayin over here in new jersey where we have full service stations, the attendants like to round up to the nearest dollar which would usually end up being gas down the side of my bed on the s10 if i didn't tell the person not to top it off

It does, but the stock tank/filler wasn't bad.
I could get a good top-off in 2 steps... fill, wait for the foam to drop, then hit it again at low speed.

The 55 gallon Titan Supertank had a HUGE surface area... and a "tower" where the filler neck attached. So the fuel foam formed over this tank that ran from under the back of the front seat in the Crew Cab to the rear axle... then when the fuel hit the roof, about 6 square feet of foaming fuel area was shoved into this 1/2 square foot tower and up and out the filler.

If I was on a long road trip and wanted maximum range, I'd have to spend the next 10 minutes waiting for the foam to mellow, then top off on low-speed, repeat numerous times.

But it was nice having a range of over 800 miles.

75 miles on an 1/8 of a tank?! Man, you have my respect and prayers! :) Not only for the gas but for the 75 mile commute everyday! I thought I was bad with 44 miles round trip.

I teach so I'm not commuting right now. Funny how I seem to put more miles on my truck now than when I'm commuting every day.

I'm just referring to those 4 gallons as usable for the sake of her math calculations. You can absolute use them while driving! ;)
