21 gallon gas tanks in 2nd gen 4 cylinder Tacomas?

Question 21 gallon gas tanks in 2nd gen 4 cylinder Tacomas?

Hey folks. I was just looking up some reviews on 2nd gen 4 cylinder Tacomas over on Edmunds when I noticed that under specs it listed the Tacoma as having a 21 gallon gas tank. Is that correct? If so, that's massive for a 4-banger and wouldn't that mean around 450-500+ miles per tank?

I currently drive a 95 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 and auto trans and I average around 330-350 miles per tank (16.5 gal tank) during the summer and 300-320 miles during the winter. My next truck is either gonna be another 4 cyl Ranger or a 4 cyl 2nd gen auto 2WD Tacoma and right now I'm leaning towards an access cab Tacoma. Are there any negatives at all to switching to a Tacoma from a Ranger?

BTW, I'm gonna go with the access cab model simply because I prefer the bucket seats due to my height. I tried getting in a 2008 regular cab once before and lets just say that it didn't happen. Also, I have just one more question and this is probably gonna sound really stupid. Do the access cab Tacomas get the same mileage as a regular cab? I've always wondered that so I just thought I'd ask. Thanks folks.

Ford no longer makes a Ranger... The added fuel gives it much better range, I fill up before I get to a quarter tank so I cannot say how far on a tank. When I do fill I am usually around 400 miles... The biggest difference between the ford and Tacoma is the build quality and reliability. Toyota is much better IMO. My first Toyota was a 67 Corona. Long time loyal Toyota driver.

The 05-12 Tacoma fuel tank capacity is 21.1 gallons on all models. The base access cab weighs about 280 lbs more than a base regular cab but the EPA mileage estimates are the same @ 20/27 MPG.

My fuel light comes on at about 350 miles, if I'm doing good. But now I'm Prerunner (6 lug) access cab with 5 spd manual, which many say gets less mpg than auto. I'll never see 27 mpg, and range between 19 and 24. Just sayin.

That's pretty dang good MPG for a 6 cyl Joe. My problem is that I don't drive stick and I don't need a 6 cyl. I'd basically just like to know if I could realistically get 23-24 mpg out of an auto 2.7 access cab Tacoma (non-Prerunner)? I should also point out that I don't push my vehicles and I drive with gas mileage in mind.

I have a 4 cyl. access cab (2012) and generally get 23 m.p.g. Mine is 2WD and automatic.

No one mentioned the main disadvantage of going from a Ford (or Chev, Dodge, Jeep, etc) to a Toyota: Your automotive repair skills will atrophy from misuse. I wouldn't expect significant gas mileage difference between the access cab and the regular cab. My 4 banger access cab 4x4 with manual transmission gets better than 26 mpg most of the time. A 2wd auto should be capable of something similar, depending on the driver.

Yes and kinda.

The "you're gonna walk" light comes on with the gauge just above E and about 4 gallons left in the tank.

You can likely push it to 500 miles on a good tank, but those who are consistently getting better than 25 have stacked the deck....
Good quality (low/no ethanol) fuel
Little heavy traffic
Moderate speed... speeds over 65 hurt

These threads have a large variance in response due to varying factors.

AC may be 4x4 or 2wd, but no one states that usually. If I say 21mpg average in mine, another says they get 24 with 2wd. Some people may use ethenol free which gives a few more mpg. I get 18-19 in the winter and 21-22 in the summer with 4x4 due to winter gas mix and 15% ethanol. Then there is peoples driving habits to consider.

Long story short, you may get between 18-25mpg average depending on how you drive and if you get 4x4 or 2wd. Enjoy.

I'm a 4 cylinder. 6 lug means wheels have 6 lug nuts instead of the usual 5 found on non Prerunner. With that comes bigger (and heavier) wheels, tires, and brakes. Also the truck sits higher stock, and the rearend is geared lower. All of this reduces mileage. I know I don't consistently get 23-24 and I have a scangauge and really monitor the way I drive. But I think thats partly for the reasons mentioned above. Others with your trim may be able to chime in on what to expect.

Bought my 2012 in April. 2.7 liter, 5 speed manual, 4x4 access cab. Less than 2400 miles on it today...Been running mileage since I drove it off the lot...Window sticker says 18 city/20 hwy. So far, during break-in topped out 19.98 mpg on highway trips of 250 miles +. Never anything less than 18 mpg, even in 4 wheel drive, driving miles of back roads in the Texas hill country in 2nd gear. Truck is fantastic...The downside, the clutch is dreadful!...

Roughly 21 gallons-a little over actually. I have an access cab 4x4 and the gas light doesn't usually turn on until I've gone 340-380 miles and I put around 17 gals in it. That is between 20-23 mpg.

2010 access cab 4x4, with the 2.7 and 5 speed manual. This is the heaviest version of the 2.7 they make and im averaging 22.5 with 50/50 city and highway driving. I also have a roof rack cutting about .5mpg off

edit, i have over 50,000 on this thing allready, and have a ultragauge, so this is a pretty accurate long term measurement.

Yeah it's a big tank for a 4-cyl but I'd call it average size for a pickup. Anyway I easily get over 400 on a tank average, not even hitting reserve. On a highway trip I am confident it would go over 500 miles if I wanted.

my light comes on around 350 I've gone to 394 miles and the needle was buried below E .. at fuel up it took 18.33 gallons. so your saying I still had another 2.5 gallons to go??

2.7 4x4 5 speed extra cab here..

The tank is 21.1 gallons.

There is normally somewhere between .25 and .5 gallons that the pump is not able to pick up, but even with that, I would not be willing to say that we have more than 20 gallons available.
The light comes on at around 17 gallons, "E" is around 18 or so.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO PHYSICAL WAY that the filler neck can hold 2.2 gallons as reported in another thread. It is simply not physically large enough to contain that much fuel. Our capacity is 21.1, not 23.3.
