Yeah, but you can get 5 or 6 uses out of them. Probably more. Don't know yet, only used mine once so far.

If the gunk gets past the MAF and down deep it might take longer....and it still puts off readings and can make the vehicle throw codes. And you still have to take things off to clean it. If you don't think right away that it's the MAF then you'd have to bring it in to get the number if you don't have a reader. Just seems to be more hassle than benefit.

Then it might not be a good idea to suggest it.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with a Toyota filter, the one that was designed best for the vehicle.

Sure, if you overspray the hell out of it til it's dripping. When done properly, no.

Some people do get over zealous with this, true.

Well that's how we learn here. From each other! :)

Sir, I assure you it's the finest paper air filter material that can be had IN THAILAND, lol...........:D IMO the oem snorkel in the fender well and the oem filter box setup do plenty to keep moisture out with or without the charcoal maxi pad as long as the opening in the fender well is above water line...the K&N with the gap between the hood and fender right where the filter sits and at hwy speed in the rain, not so much maybe. Even with the prefilter on the K&N cone.

Who are "they"? The aftermarket ones have their place....not in dusty muddy environments and not left neglected as long as you can paper. My car has had a K&N all it's life. It is a pavement machine and it gets driven mostly in an urban are with large expanses of cement and grassy lawns. The oil stays as clean and nice as the truck with oem filter and intake and it is prerunner so same driving environment. If I had 4wd and/or lived in rural environment or desert where there would be much more dust/dirt around, I would stay stock with paper filter. Just like everything else, it has it's place and one thing doesn't fit every need. Track vehicles no runny z papuh eh? Keeping things in perspective is never detrimental..............

I ran a foam filter wrap on the 1982 prerunner with weber carb. Worked great in all conditions. Easy to pull off and clean without filter even needing cleaning.

    Define "performs"???

If you are talking about airflow, yes, the oiled cotton gauze (K&N) will outperform the paper filter.

If you are talking about filtering ability, no, the paper filter will outperform the oiled cotton gauze (K&N).

If you are talking about $$/year for an air filter, the oiled cotton gauze (K&N) will outperform the paper filter,,, but only after 5 years or so.

Filtering vs. Flow vs. $$$,,, it's a trade-off, you don't get 'em all.

"The oil stays clean...", do you have some oil analysis results to back that up? From the research I've done, any vehicle running an oiled cotton gauze filter shows increased levels of silica in the oil.

OK, NO! Other than it is the same clear color and consistency to the touch as it was out of the bottle new and I have never blown a motor in 36 yrs of tinkering with my rides so it might have but was not enough to matter. And if you don't go a yr without changing it, seems to me whatever silica in the oil goes out the drain hole.

And, if you start out using the vehicle in an environment conducive to lots of silica floating around to be sucked up into the intake then stay with paper.

Hold on, not trying to challenge you. Just trying to seperate the subjective from the objective.

Definitely agree that there are many out there that swear by K&Ns and have used them forever. That just leads me to believe that while the data shows that silica levels increase, that increased silica may not be sufficient to cause long-term damage or shorten engine life. What silica level, over what period of time, that turns out to be problematic though is data that I haven't seen anywhere. Would certainly help close the loop though if it could be found.

Like you referenced, regular oil changes also help guite a bit here, by removing the silica and starting over.

Personally though, I'm not going to take the risk of the K&N. Paper filters better, and if reusable is a concern, the aFe Pro-dry drop-in shows some increased silica levels in the oil when the air filter is totally clean, but run it for a bit to dirty it up some, and the silica levels level off.

Well, I have paper, aFe drop-in & K&N drop-in for oem intake & a K&N and aFe cone for the K&N intake. I'm just gonna keep rotating them out every once in awhile just to be safe.

I say just shove a wad of moist printer paper in your air box and call it good. Lightly spritz with Penzoil 20w-50 every 50k miles.
