Hold on, not trying to challenge you. Just trying to seperate the subjective from the objective.

Definitely agree that there are many out there that swear by K&Ns and have used them forever. That just leads me to believe that while the data shows that silica levels increase, that increased silica may not be sufficient to cause long-term damage or shorten engine life. What silica level, over what period of time, that turns out to be problematic though is data that I haven't seen anywhere. Would certainly help close the loop though if it could be found.

Like you referenced, regular oil changes also help guite a bit here, by removing the silica and starting over.

Personally though, I'm not going to take the risk of the K&N. Paper filters better, and if reusable is a concern, the aFe Pro-dry drop-in shows some increased silica levels in the oil when the air filter is totally clean, but run it for a bit to dirty it up some, and the silica levels level off.

Well, I have paper, aFe drop-in & K&N drop-in for oem intake & a K&N and aFe cone for the K&N intake. I'm just gonna keep rotating them out every once in awhile just to be safe.

I say just shove a wad of moist printer paper in your air box and call it good. Lightly spritz with Penzoil 20w-50 every 50k miles.

No... the charcoal filter is not a particulate filter. It's only purpose is to prevent fuel vapor from the intake from getting out of the airbox after shutting the truck down.

ALL K&N filters... whether drop-in or "CAI", allow significantly more dirt to pass.
I'm running a K&N on my motorcycle and every time I send an oil sample in, Blackstone comments that I should check to be sure that my airbox is properly sealed because the dirt is so high.

This is dirt in the oil... that has come in through the intake and gone passed the piston and rings to get into the oil.

I've seen Toyotas with 100k with the heads pulled that look brand new.
I've seen Toyotas with 40k with the heads pulled... factory honing crosshatch still obvious, but heavy scratching and scoring from the dirt that a K&N allows through.
