Need advice!!! Would you take a 1,200 mile round trip w/new 2012 Tacoma?

here is the skinny,

I am getting my new 2012 RC 4x4 5-spd Tacoma this Saturday, and well have a rental car reservation from a few weeks ago because I am driving up to PA to visit my sister and her family for a few days. I would be leaving one week after getting the new truck.

I was assuming it would be ok, but part of me really wants to know if I should wait and go ahead and rent the car, My little 1990 Honda Civic burned a valve and thank the Lord I was able to get into my new Tacoma easy and with good payments.

I worked for a Honda/Acura dealer for 6 years as a Service Writer and we used to advise people go easy with starts and stops for a few hundred miles and try and avoid prolonged highway miles till you get a certain amount of mileage on it,

Also I USED to ride a Hayabusa and the break in from Suzuki was very strict too, I remember not taking the freeway and being sure to try and keep the engine fluxuated in RPMS with around town driving/riding.

Reason I ask is I am wanting to keep this truck a long long time, I can afford the rental if needed, that's no big deal...i was renting a Yaris anyway, lol...

Forgive me as I haven't had a chance to dig for an owners manual PDF and there may be very specific instructions in the manual regarding this.

I know the Yota 4cyl engines are awesome, Iv'e had an 85 SR-5 and a 93 RC 4x4 in the past and they were wonderful, both were used though...

 

There's a section in the owner's manual for break-in. Just follow it. You can avoid staying at a constant RPM by downshifting... Break-in is only 1000 miles, so it will be complete by the time you finish the trip.

just drive it like normal..... I took a 300 mile trip in my Tacoma the next day after I bought it from Dallas to Austin going 70mph.......... don't baby the truck, it's a truck after all

 

I took a 2500 mile road trip as soon as I got my 2011. Worked wonderfully. Do it!

 

Did it with my Tundra... Took delivery and when I showed up for work the next day, I was informed by my boss that I needed to go home and pack a bag because I was needed in Denver the next afternoon.

For the first 500 miles or so, every 20 or 30 miles I'd pull off the freeway and slow to a stop, idle for a couple of minutes (literally maybe 2 minutes), then gently accelerate back to speed.

Other than that, I avoided using the cruise control for the first 500 or so, and held speed down to 65 for the first 1000.

Traded that truck at 125k (one of the biggest mistakes of my life) and it did not burn a drop of oil running 7500 mile change intervals (still "by the book" for the '03 Tundra).

And hey a RC 5-speed has no cruise "YET" My little sister is going to be so excited and happy! ha...

 

Careful on the 2012, been a report or two that the "cheap" mod doesn't work... but I thought I read one that did.

Worst case, you could probably sell the parts here.

I think I found that guys topic today, something about he installed everything he thought he needed and then nothing happened and then thought he needed another wire from the wheel to the ECU?

I haven't had cruise on a car for 9+ years, i'm okay w/out it but if i could eventually have it I would love to.

I had it on my bike and it was cool, for the most part...

 

I also found out the drive from Asheville NC to PA is a rather beautiful drive and I have never done it, sounds like photo ops and stops every so often are going to fit in nicely,

 

sounds like a fun first trip man! mind if i ask what part of PA? we go from knoxville to buffalo NY like once a year. my truck went a year ago. going agin this winter. idk about the RC seats but the trd off road seats in the DC are really comfy. even after 11.5 hours on the road.

Her In laws live up there, huge huge family but they are awesome and they adopted my sis with so much love it's amazing, and the fact she delivered their newest grand daughter helps, lol.

 

My wife and I are both originally from PA and currrently live in the Virginia. We took a trip to Asheville last year and I think we liked the drive about as much as we liked the destination. If you're headed toward western PA you'll be in the mountains the whole way, should be some awesome scenery.

 

Yeah man, AVL rocks IMO, especially if you ride motorcycles also as the parkway is here and Deals Gap is only over an hour away!

Probably stating the obvious here, but make sure all fluid levels and tire pressures
are good. You never know what dealer surprises might present themselves.
