The 4 cylinder Highlander more HP than the Taco???

Toyota now offers a Highlander with a 2.7L 4 cylinder producing 187hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. What is different about this engine compared to the Tacoma 2.7? How do we get those same hp ratings? Is it a simple computer re-programing chip? Or is it a different engine all together? ( I doubt that) Anyone know anything about this? And Ideas? Maybe there is simple mod to get the Highlanders power?

all the power developed on that engine is in the higher RPM ranges not really suited for a truck where you need your peak torque at a lower RPM range.

It's a larger version of the Camry 2.4. Not for trucks.

Probably as simple as a different camshaft profile. You could easily squeeze that kind of power out of the top end by changing up the cams. Smart thinking.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Way different engine. Different bore and stroke. Different valve sizes. The only thing it shares with the Tacoma 2.7 is the displlacement.

Glad that I sparked some research! I didn't realize the bore, stroke, and cams were different. That does make sense that its the Camry 2.4L with .3L more displacement. When I saw 2.7L I assumed it was based of the Tacoma engine. The Highland is a heavy SUV so I thought it might make sense.
