I have 44K on my Taco 2.7L and this will be my first oil change since I bought it. I see in the manual it calls for 05/20 weight. I was thinking about 05/30 Mobil One synthetic. Just wondering if anyone else uses 05/30 instead of 05/20.

I run 5-30 in my 06 and I plan on using synthetic after 75K but it all depends on where you live and temperature wise. If you live somewhere really cold, you better off with 5-20 than 10-30.

You don't think that is too light for when you started using the truck offroad.

I don't use 10w30 but the best weight of motor oil depends on the climate where you live.

Following is the average monthly temperature range in Kentucky:

    • MONTH: High / Low
    • JAN: 41 / 25
    • FEB: 46 / 28
    • MARCH: 56 / 36
    • APRIL: 68 / 46
    • MAY: 77 / 55
    • JUNE: 85 / 64
    • JULY: 88 / 68
    • AUG: 87 / 66
    • SEP: 80 / 59
    • OCT: 69 / 47
    • NOV: 56 / 37
    • DEC: 45 / 29
With these temps, 0w20, 5w20 or 5w30 would be fine. I would not recommend 10w30 because it will not flow as well on cold mornings, although to be honest you won't really notice a difference, but your engine might, over time. I just think 10wt is a little heavy for a 25 degree startup, considering that the OEM recommends something as light as 0w20.

Summers here in Sacramento can get up to 110 degrees and winters down to 25 degrees -- I've always used 5w30 per OEM recommendation and never had any oil-related problems or any problem of any kind now that I think of it. I've got over 80k miles and it purrs like a kitten.

I appreciate your response and effort on behalf of my thread. I have edited my thread to read 05/30 instead of 10/30, 05 is what I meant to post. After reading you information I think I'll run 00/30 mobil one which will cover both cold and hot weather. BTW you can keep that 110 degrees!
    Regards;
    Bill

I would stick with what toyota recommends. If you have a problem and they test the oil and it is not 5w20 or 0w20 they can void the warranty. I run 0w20.

You are really over thinking this, with a big assumption that 20 is too light for hot weather for no good reason.

I'd go 0w20 over 5w20 before I went the other way to anything/30.

I went with 5W30 in mine after noticing the owner's manual suggests that weight for high speed or heavy duty use. FWIW I have seen no adverse effect on gas mileage.

Plus the fact the the 0w-20 oils use a fantastic basestock, and the additive package is also of higher quality. It's a win-win. My truck never ran better, sounded better, and it just seemed happier with the Mobil 1 0w-20. Going back to it next oil change for the winter.

Been using 5W-30 per the 2006 owner's manual (a.k.a before fuel efficiency mandates came into effect and lightweight oils were recommended to meet fleetwide standards).

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I use Mobil 1 0w20 synthetic, just go with what the owners manual recommends, they know best in most instances.

My '13 PreRunner has 1200 miles on it and I'll switch over to synthetic this week. I have ran Amsoil for years and love it. It is considered an "exotic" in synthetics, as compared to the others that you can buy at the normal auto parts store. Amsoil 0/20 with the EA oil filter has a 25K change internals. So, I only change the oil once a year on my truck and my wife's car. I average approx. 23K miles per year and my wife around 15K. That is 2 oil changes as compared to 8 with convential oil.

My 2006 2.7L has 81k miles and has run 5w30 all its life. Just curious if anyone thinks there might be problems if switched to 5w20. I really don't think there will be a problem but I wanted to ask TW since I am not the most experienced person in the world.

Will not be a problem, and you might get a between .5 and 1 MPG better. M1 AFE 0w-20 or Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 5w-20 would be what I would recommend for your truck. If you are using any appreciable amount of oil between changes my I would try Maxlife 5w-20.

Thanks... my 2.7 engine is in fantastic condition -- starts easily, runs super smooth and purrs like a kitten. The oil level does not move one tiny bit between oil changes every 5k, which is a little strange in itself. I'm glad to see 5w20 conventional oil is available on the market, for a moment I was thinking maybe the lightweight stuff is only available in synthetic.

Pennzoil YB is a great conventional oil. My oil level never goes down either. Not strange just a tight, well made engine. Millions of satisfied customers.
