4.56s or 4.88s?

4.56s OR 4.88s with 285s on your 2.7?Is 4.56s enough is 4.88s to much?

I had already ordered 4.88s.but I called company they said I pay 26.00 shipping and send them back.they will overnite me 4.56s for free.Sounds like this will be well worth my 26.00$.Im mostly on the blacktop anyway.

 

Could someone explain how/why 4.88's would be too much? just out of curiosity...

I understand the rpms will be higher at highway speeds, and one would have to shift more often accelerating to speed, but where does the negatives come into play?

Then, when in 4LO, the gearing would be even lower right??

How much of a difference is there between 4.56 and 4.88?

I personally don't have either. But, talking with others has led me to say 4.88's. The guys I have talked to said 4.56's weren't enough of a jump to justify the cost of the gears. One guy even went up to 4.88's. Those trucks were 3.4's too. If I were going to regear it would be to 4.88's. Just my $0.02

 

I run a 4ply 265 in the winter with factory wheels for more power in the snow.Pretty light combo.Would 4.88s be to much ? I run a 8ply 285 in the summer.Almost twice the weight.Would 4.56s be enough?

 

My suggestion is to look at stock RPMS with your transmission ratios (probably your OD) and stock sized tires and stock gears. Then look again with stock gears and whatever sized tire you run. Then again with 4.56s and once more with 4.88s. All for varying speeds.

For me with 35s, 4.56s, and 6 spd MT I run 80 mph and 3000 RPMs.

I wouldn't want higher because I do run 80 with frequency and for long durations.

Evaluate your needs.

Might also look at the torque curve of your engine. And see where which gears will put you where at what speeds.

 

with the 4cyl id deff get 4.88's us 6cyl guys only need 4.56's ........keep the 4.88's will help when u tow or haul a heavy load...expecially if your wheeling.....slightly higher highway rpms are worth the extra power and offroad ability

 

Don't mean to hijack...but I still haven't decided what's best for me....

You can get away 4.88s Jamie, with that auto trans OD your RPMs will be close to mine at 80 MPH

 

Alright thanks. I want 4lo to be nice and low. I don't generally go 80 either. Highest speed limit here is 65. I'll give 4:88 a try.

firm believer in 4,88s here after having them for a couple years - i personally wounldnt go any other way with 33s and the 2,7.

4.56 would work if you do a lot of flat highway driving without a lot of hills and dont offroad much.

I get 20 mpg on the highway going 72 mph at 2700 rpm

 

4.88s here with 33s and a 4 cylinder, LOVE IT. wouldnt do it any other way

 

On the subject of reagearing, How can I tell if my truck has been regeared??
Per sticker on the door it came out with 225/75-r15, one of the previous owners put 31 10.5 r15s on it its a 98 2.7l 5spd originally came with 4.10 gears. How could i tell if they have been changed

I thought I heard somewhere that the 4.56s require a different carrier than the 2.7 has. Am I crazy?

 

4.88 with 33's
I had that setup was a bit buzzy on the highway I don't do radical off road (hardly any off road)
I guess it is livable with a quiet exhaust
4.56 with 33's end up giving you about the same RPM as 265/70/16 and 4.30's (stock)
off road, local, the way to go
DD mostly on road an lots of highway 4.56
