I'm glad you think so. I think I found a place with a bay and lift where I can get the work done without a lot of money. Will post more pics. By the way, the smell, is almost gone, pull sits out and gave the interiors a steam power chemical vacuum, we found a lot of dry syrup like from dropped sodas and dog hair!! Was the dog addicted to soda.....who knows!

Ahh rust! I know ye too well!

If you have an air compressor and some time, get one of these:
http://www.harborfreight.com/air-ang...der-32046.html

One of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Roloc-Disc-Pad...xgy_auto_img_y

And a couple boxes of these:
http://www.amazon.com/3M-07480-Coars...rds=roloc+disc

The combination cleans up metal really well:

Welcome to TW, and good luck with the restoration!

What everyone said about removing rust is absolutely right. If you paint or rhino-line over the rust, it'll just get worse, except now you won't be able to see it until the paint/liner starts to chip off. So do your best to remove all of the rust.

As far as applying a rust inhibitor - I plan on using Raptor Liner, it's a DIY version of Rhino Lining. A guy used it here, and has before and 2 years after pics to show how it's held up - it looks like new. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...ml#post6103286

With that said, I'd be hesitant to use it on steel that has already rusted unless you clean it very very well. I've heard good things about POR-15 on already-rusted steel as someone else mentioned above.

Thanks for such an informative answer, you just made my life a little easier, now i know where and what to buy for this project. As soon as i can put some time aside, may be in January and get a bay and lift for rent I will start the process.

Check put POR 15 its a rust inhibitor and gets good reviews. I'm doing a frame off on a 68 Chevy and looked into it but decided to powder coat.

Smile Interiors clean up pictures

The smell inside of this truck was overwhelming when I first opened the door. It came to San Antonio from (today infamous) Connecticut.
Got to work on it about two weeks after it arrived, I endured two weeks of foul odors , like aged digested cheese , my wife wouldn't ride with me, she said it was vomit.
Last Saturday we gave it a first go, out came the seats, it took 2/3 days to really dry out, it has been uncommonly warm/ humid cloudy around here.
Part of some stains came back, the smell is almost gone, so tomorrow we are cleaning all interiors again. Carpet and seats get steam vacuum chemical treatment.
See the pictures of before and after.
After tomorrow I will have pictures of the final interior appearance.

If I were you I'd take it to a Toyota dealer and find out if they can do the rust preventative technique applied to the 01-04 model years to save the frames from rust. My 2000 was so bad from rust, holes through the frame, that Toyota purchased it back.

That I din't know!. that is good advise, thanks really. I will consider this option and report back in this forum about the Toyota dealer response. I'm driving on Friday out to Mexico, in another truck but when we come back I will certainly make an appointment wit the dealer.

The dealer service advisor just gave me some third party name and number for "spot rust treatment" no frame treatment or anything big. He also gave me a 1800 number for the manufacturer. I'll call and see what they say.

Yikes

IMO that looks bad. I would remove the bed and have it blasted and see how deep the corrosion is. Keep in mind that it is also corroded on the other side of what you can see. Man I am glad I live in Texas. And when i buy a used truck I always get the car fax to see what state it is from.
Any Northen states I pass and keep looking. thats just me.
