Oil change

I have gone a few changes without putting a new washer on and reusing the old one and had no leaks so you could prob do without it this time but get some when u buy the filters. Not sure if the filters are the same. Was the runner a 4cyl? Just make sure the part numbers match

 

Yea mine never leak but the dealer always gives them to me with the filters so I just throw it on anyways.

 

Thanks for the info with washers, I am going to presume the dealer changed the washer with the last change so I should be good for this one. The filter was a v8 4 runner. its been a few years since I had the truck and that filter would be the same or very similar to the one on the Tundra. I will just get the correct filter from the dealer. I did notice the last filter they put on was for the V6 so i don't thing that makes to much of a difference there.

 

I changed my oil the first time a while ago and it's coming due again. Looking for info about the discrepancy between the dipstick and what the manual calls for. The listed capacity makes it overfull on the dipstick. Any thoughts?

I'm sure most of you know or have heard of a "Fumoto Drain Valve". I got rid of the plug and installed one of those. It's pure heaven when doing an oil change. I bought the locking clip, the nipple and the nipple cover and I love it. No more hot oil gushing out all at once and it drains where I want it to. This way i know I'll never wear out the threads on my oil pan considering how long these 2.7's last. I was worried about the valve malfunctioning off road or any other time and having an "oil drain catastrophe". After getting one and looking at the design of it there is no way it can especially if you have the locking clip. Now all someone has to do is design a filter with a drain valve on the bottom so we can drain the filter with a hose into the pan "before" we unscrew it and have the usual mess.

As for oil and filters I use Amsoil Signature 10-30 and a Mobil 1 filter and change every 7500 miles. I could go more but I stay on the safe side at 7500. You really can't go wrong with any of the new synthetics whether it is Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum along with many others. Even the new Dino's are great as long as it's a name brand.

 

I've been thinking about the fumoto valve and this may have pushed over the edge toward getting one LOL..

 

Just get one. They are nice! Take a good look at it when you get it like I did. No way it's going to malfunction. The damn Japs are wizards when it comes to engineering. They built our Taco's didn't they? I do mild off-roading and there are times I get into sticky situations I didn't plan on. Mine has never leaked a drop. The biggest problem is getting all the crud off of it before an oil change but that isn't the Fumoto's fault. IMHO the Fumoto is the BOMB and no, I don't work for Fumoto. I read about these valves on BITOG before I took the plunge and bought one. You would have to get in just the right off-road situation to bang one of these if that is even possible. A serious off-road situation I doubt "anyone" would ever get into and if that ever happened I doubt the Fumoto would be you're biggest concern in a case like that.

 

Just bought two (one for my Tacoma, one for my gf's Impreza), just one more messy oil change to suffer through.

 

That's 1 qt less than the book says, for me. I always go off the dipstick as well, but I've never put more than 5qt in.

 

You don't need 5.5 quarts unless you insist on the level being right at the full mark, which is understandable but also unnecessary. One 5-quart jug will put the level in the middle between low and full, which is "OK" :



6 quarts will put you above the full mark, a practice which should be avoided.

 

5 and 1/8 quarts

 

You'll like 'em.

 

Where's the best deal to buy one of these valves?

 

Amazon had decent prices on some of the drain valves.

 

I bought mine right from the Fumoto website. When it comes to price for something I want and it's cheap to begin with I don't care what I pay. My time is worth something to me. I suspect you can get one cheaper if you need to though. Furthermore, I am not the best person to talk to when it comes to money management. I'm sure you can get one from Amazon or somewhere else for a few dollars cheaper. They ARE nice. That's all I can say about the Fumoto Drain Valve.
