So... i bought the OBX Header for the 2005-Up Tacoma

So... i bought the OBX Header for the 2005-Up Tacoma

Well i found a good deal online, and got the header for 208.00 Shipped i figured.. why not give it a shot.

Well got it in today (took about 3 business days to get here) and opened the package and i was shocked to see how nice this header actually is.

It looks just like the Doug Thorley Header and the welds are very nice; welded on the inside and outside, and the welds are grinded smooth on the inside to not disrupt flow. The merge collectors look very nice with no blockage as well.

The header flange is thick; the steel used is very thick as well. To my suprise its actually a heavy little header. Its a 4-2-1 design which should provide good low-midrange power.

I will update with pics and how the install goes. But so far so good

And btw i know a few things about a header, as i have owned everything from mugen to DC sports on other cars, so i know what i am looking at This copuld be a nice lower cost option for people that dont have 500 + to dump on a 4-banger that will never be fast anyways.

Well i just wanted to update this thread with the pros and cons of this header.

Pros; for me were, the header fit like a glove no fitment issues what-so-ever. Even with the air pump valve; it clears the header just fine on my 2010 tacoma. It was easy to install except for the pipes got in the way of a couple of the bolts making them difficult to get to.

Cons; The gasket they include is cheap, they dont include the gaskets for the air pump, and no bolts for the collector. They expect you to use the stock spring bolts but there are no nuts included in the install that will fit the stock spring bolts.

So my advice before you install buy a OEM head gasket, OEM collector gasket, and some nuts for the spring bolts. Other than that it truly made a difference on the truck! i wont say it will win a drag race, but it is by no means "sluggish" anymore.

no i dont have any during the install, we had such a hard time getting the heatshield off the OEM header i never even thought to snap a pic.

Loving the way the truck does not lag anymore when you hit the throttle! it was worth the 200 bucks!

I have OBX headers on my S197. I got them for 100 bucks used on the mustang forum I am on and I must say that I was very impressed. If the quality is a standard across the board for their products you should have zero issues with them.

yeah working on them for you guys it has been in the single digits with the temp over here and i have not went out and took the time to snap any pics. I can tell you the header is holding up great i really like it alot

Yea I was wondering about this just the other week but couldn't figure out 05-09 and what it'd mean to put it on my 2012. In for pics.

Did it do anything for sound? I have the stock muffler and have heard that many folks say header replacement gives a good amount of sound (and is best bang for buck performance mod) and will also make aftermarket mufflers sound a little better if they're too raspy/garbage sounding

Yeah i still need to get some pics the weather finally broke here and we have some nice temps now.

Yeah the sound went up, i have a dynomax super turbo muffler welded in the place of the factory muffler and still retain both cats, and the exhaust is louder. As far as performance is concerned; honestly i could feel the difference in the way the truck felt on power. Would i take it to a drag strip and win races........ No, but the truck is no longer sluggish between shifts and actually does not bog down to death under 2k rpm's After you look at the stock header off the truck you can see how restrictive it truly is compared to the OBX.

I know people would argue all day long for the LCE header and they may be correct, but i like a 4-2-1 header design over a 4-1 long tube design. I keep my truck in the lower RPM's and 4-2-1 is known for helping in that area.

My fav. thing about the header is the wind sound it has when you let the RPMs climb.

Also one thing to note is i have a 2010 and had no fitment issues. the 2010-2012 owners have claimed to have fitment issues with the DT header (which OBX looks identical to) and the reason being the air pump valve on top of the header. It was supposed to have changed for one of those years. I have no issue with mine and i have clearance under the valve.

definately gonna buy these instead especially since money is so tight. i never considered these before because of issues with obx in the past. but im gonna give them a shot when my taxes come in
