My 2006 2.7L has 86K miles and does the same thing. On cold start, if it's under 35*F, it has a light knock after the engine spools down. If I give it some gas, the knock gets a little louder so I just be careful to give it very light throttle until the knock goes away. The knock goes away very quickly, about 2 minutes after initial cold start. It's a little irritating but it only happens on the coldest mornings (CA) and it goes away quickly, plus I haven't had any problems with driveability or fuel economy or oil consumption. Runs fine.

I did a couple searches on "engine knock" and "cold knock." These links may or may not be helpful to you:

Only does it in D (flipped it into N today while driving) starts to become noticable after about 1500rpm. Also, is it normal to idle at 1500ish RPM (25*)?

    Thanks

I almost believe its something transmission related...sounds great in N (when revved) havent tried going real fast in R when cold :) or the lower gears..

My '04 2.7 makes a noise that might be similar... haven't figured it out yet. I'm hoping it's not a timing chain issue. My 2.7 has mechanical lifters, so it's not the lifters failing to pump up properly. Only does it cold, and only for a little while. I use Mobil 1 5w-30. It's not a very happy-sounding sound. :(

Im dont think mines engine related..just transmission related when the fluid is cold..think im going to get new fluid and filter and go from there.

Since it only does it in D I changed the trans fluid (drained/refilled) Still doing it :( I have no earthly idea.

I dont think it could be timing (pinging) because if I rev it in N it sounds good.

Maybe it could be an exhaust manifold cracked? Seems popular on this year truck. Heat shield rattles so I may take it off and have a look.

Dont understand why it could leak ONLY in gear and not in N or P (Noise only happens when its cold or been sitting more than 1 hour @ 45* temps)

    Ideas?..

Confirmed cracked manifold :( Trying to decide which route I want to take. I *THINK* this is recently happened but IDK for sure. You guys think the valves are OK?

Thanks I'll update again when the noise is gone to confirm a fix for others like me desperately searching the net lol
