Oil from factory

Did you see the 2nd "notable exception"? Synthetic oil changes at 2500 miles?!?!? Seriously WTF

 

Extended change intervals are NOT a primary benefit of synthetic.
Enhanced protection during cold starts, and at temperature extremes are the primary benefits.

Marketing people have pushed extended OCI since the 1970s in an effort to make the increased cost more palatable.

And the 2500 mile OCI on the flex fuel vehicles running E85 more than 50% of the time is due to the highly rich fuel mixture increasing fuel contamination of the oil.
Ethanol is stoich at around 9.5:1... gasoline at 14.7:1
You need 50% more ethanol to run the engine at a comparable load.


I run synthetic and change every 5k even though I'm out of warranty.

 

How do you know? I am running pennzoil plattinum full synthetic and from what I've seen on peoples oil analysis it beats mobile 1 in engine wear.

some people say you should run half synthetic and half regular the first time, then you can fully synthetic. all though I am unsure if it came with synthetic from the factory.

 

2.7 started coming with 0w20 synthetic from the factory in either '11 or '12.

There is no logical reason to run 50/50 for the first oil change, and there is no longer a reason to wait until 10 or 20k before switching.

 

I see this is the 4 cyl section. Mine is a V6, but still...it doesn't matter. Amsoil is the best but I'm not willing to pay those prices. I'd rather run mobil1 or penzoil platinum and change it every 3-4k.

Doesn't matter what you do, it's not going to last forever.

 

I had an '07 regular cab and always took it to the dealer for service. When I started doing oil changes on my AC myself I of course read where it held 6 quarts of oil, even though I go by the dipstick and add 5 1/2. Looking back at the service records on my '07 I see it always listed 5 quarts of oil.. Did the dealer always under fill it by a quart, and if so who knows what kind of oil they used.

 

When I get back home from vacation, I will post my UOA of Mobil 1. The report is on my desktop.

Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum are both high quality top tier oils. Use either with confidence. Heck you can use Wal Mart Supertech at 5K intervals, and your engine will outlive the rest of the truck.

 

Toyota moved to 0w-20 to ensure that synthetic was used to protect the 10,000 mile change engines and that's it. 0w is only available as synthetic, so that covers their asses and they won't have people going 10,000 on non synthetic oils. Most enignes can perform under the old oil specs, but must use the 5,000 intervals. Do whatever your wallet allows and you are comfortable with.

It's all 20 weight oil when at operating temp. For most of the continental U.S. this 0w vs 5w use is pretty moot for us 4 cyl Tacoma owners as the 0w does not allow the 10,000 mile change advantage.

Edit: also be careful that it's 5,000 miles OR 6 months.
