Oil from factory

Hi guys, new guy here.
I have a new 2013 tacoma Reg Cab 2.7l 5sp 4x4 purchased in Jan,2013.
I get free oil changes for 2years but I would like to do the first one sooner than recommended even if I have to pay for it and do myself.
Can someone tell me what its filled with from the factory?
The manual recommends 0-20 and the filler cap says 0-20 but no mention of synthetic or not. I dont want to be switching back and forth between synthetic and reg oil.

doesn't matter, switching won't hurt anything. I want to say they come with dino but don't quote me on that.

0W-20 is only available in synthetic. You're throwing good oil away if you change it before 5000 miles (under normal conditions).

BigIron, I have the exact same truck as you. Your truck came with synthetic and the first oil change is recommended by Toyota at 10,000 miles. I have concerns about waiting that long for the first change as well !

 

Just to be clear, the 2013 2.7L engine is now a 10,000 oil change? In 2011 the manual states to change oil every 5000 miles on the 2.7.

It is very explicit about not going 10,000 miles. . .

 

^ this. Engines are run after assembly / before installation and it is not necessary to change the oil before the recommended 5k mile interval. You can if you want -- it makes some people feel better and that's fine -- but like Thom said, it's a waste of good oil. (The factory oil filters are excellent and will catch any residual shavings produced after the initial factory run-in.)

I understand that many full-synthetic oils can go 10k miles according to their manufacturer, but Toyota's recommended OCI for the Tacoma 4-cyl remains 5k miles.

 

Redelvis, Did a dealer tell you that? I didnt see anything about 10,000 miles. My manual says 5000.
I could swear I saw some pennzoil 0-20 that did not say synthetic however I cant find it online anywhere so maybe I was wrong.

 

Yes...despite the 10K OCI Toyota has for many of the synthetic FF's, the Taco still calls for a 5K OC. I would guess that they're worried about a truck being used under "severe conditions" and is playing it safe.

 

I think in the contract for the two years of maintenance, it will cover oil changes only at 10,000 mile intervals. The owner's manual still recommends changing the oil at 5k intervals though. I just did my first oil change at 5k and I know one can't judge the condition of the oil by color, but it wasn't that dark at all. According various black stone oil analysis reports, the new synthetics can very well go past the 5k intervals. I wouldn't mind extending the OCI to 7.5k miles in the future.

0w20 oil in your Taco is synthetic. I think it's best to change it out at the 5k interval, otherwise it will be a waste of good oil (as the others have said). A 5qt jug at Walmart will set ya back about $30. If you do decide to change the oil yourself, remember to measure the oil level after pouring in 5 quarts!!! Couple of members here (including me) have found out that the 2.7L only drains about 5 qts and not the 6.1qts that is listed in the manual.

You can confirm this by pouring your used oil into one of those empty 5qt jugs from walmart. Let us know what you find. You could be surprised by what the dipstick reads (if you can read it ;])

 

If the owner's manual recommends oil change intervals of 5k miles, and the owner's manual recommendations must be followed during the warranty period, it sounds like the 2-year maintenance contract (providing oil changes only at 10k mile intervals) will void the manufacturer's warranty... something's not right.

 

I spoke with the service Manager at the dealership last night who said that the recomended oil change on the 2013 2.7l Taco is 5000 miles and it is covered under the free maintenance agreement that comes with all new toyota cars and trucks. Like it was mentioned before, the recommended oil is 0-20 which is only available as synthetic.

 

I took my 2012 2.7 to the dealer last week for a oil change as I get lifetime free changes and they told me that the Toyota interval for the 0-20 is 5k miles.

I am hopping that they put synthetic in it and am going to send a sample to Blackstone to verify.

I was hesitant to take it to the dealer but I am tighter than a ticks ass and cannot pass up a free oil change. Although the chimpanzee that changed it spilled oil all over the valve cover. They told me " if you smell burning oil don't worry, the guy missed the hole " ? WTF? missed the hole, really?

 

It is sad that Free always seems to have a price. BTW Mobil 1 0w-20 AFE works great in 2.7L Taco's. Ask me how I know.

 

I took my truck into the dealership today and asked about the 5,000 mile oil change and at first he said that usually synthetics don't require 5k oil change intervals. Then he went and picked up some papers and it said the Tacoma does qualify for the 5k oil changes even though it has synthetic. Go figure.

Oil change interval is still 5k/6mo in the 2013 booklet.

In the 2005-2010 manuals, recommended oil viscosity was 5W30. The 2011+ manuals "require" 0W20, but allows 5W30 for one oil change. The engine is the same. In all likelihood Toyota found 0W20 could eck out an extra 1-2 mpg in EPA testing, so Toyota now "requires" 0W20 simply to maintain the EPA rating (and the title of most fuel efficient pickup in the US).

There's a 1000-mile break-in period specified in the manual. You should change the oil and filter then. Use either 0W20 or 5W30.

 

There is no reason to change your oil & filter at 1000 miles. That's not in the owners manual.
