Unexplicable Power Boost

Or I hope to get it explained. So recently I have observed a VERY noticable powerboost in my 2007 4 banger. I bought it in June with mid 19k miles on it. The only thing I can think to trace it to is I took out the secondary air filter shortly after I got it. Now it is about 23k miles so I'm thinking it might have adjusted to the modification on the intake? Anyone wanna toss in their $.02?

 

How sure about you about the power boost? It could be that you could have gotten better throttle response which you thought was a boost in power.

 

Please describe the power increase your experiencing?

 

That could be very true because I do not know the exact difference. Now that you mention it, it seems that is the case. I notice it when i let the clutch out in first, but I have not done any highway driving since noticing it at higher RPMs.

Could it also be that the computer readjusted to my driving habits from the previous owner?

 

mostly taking off from a dead stop. I have a manual tranny so when I let it out the same way I have always done and it pulls a little harder and accelerates quicker. I'll test it out accelerating at higher speeds to give you a better idea.

 

Not sure if the computer knows one driver from the next, it knows fuel/air mixture and adjusts for that. Maybe that is what you are asking? With removal of the secondary filter, maybe the engine in getting a little more air and is adjusting for that... just my guess, don't know too much about 2nd gen Tacos.

 

It is interesting. I have a 2009 4x4 2.7 with just over 1200kms (800miles) and the more I drive it the peppier it feels as it slowly breaks-in I am assuming? But your 2007 with 19,000miles already should be broken in? Must be something to do with the air filter removal like you say. I still havnt done that to mine yet. I am concerned with voiding the warranty if I remove it. But I really want to!

 

Ya I had heard somewhere that the computer can readjust to a drivers habits. Maybe hearsay but I thought I would toss it out there. The secondary filter is the only cause I can think of.

 

Yes as the one thing I was weary about is if the previous owner broke the engine in properly but the clutch didn't slip and there were no signs of improper care. I had my mechanic at work (a genius with engines) take it for a night and check it out and he couldn't find anything but good with it. in fact he converted his '81 dogde pick up to biodeisel completely out of scratch (quite a feat seeing how he build the converter for the cooking oil on his own out of scratch) He is the only I would trust with it!

as for your warranty concerns. Just be careful when you drill out the rivets you don't go through the outside casing. whenever you take it in for service you can just pop it back in plus in order to void the warranty toyota has to prove your mod was the exact cause of the problem.

 

I have an 07 Reg Cab with 10k miles on it and I have noticed occassionaly it will do it. It feels like the computer readjusting. Mine did it with the secondary air filter in and out so I dont think that is the problem. I am going to ask the service guru next time I take it in.

 

sounds like your engine is just breaking itself in, and will continue to do so for a while. mine was over 20K when it happened so IDK

have you ever heard someone refer to the powerband as a part? like oh well i got my new shit on and a new powerband this thing rips so hard now.

 

In the winter we get oxygenated fuel that lowers power so when spring hits I get a "bigger" powerband, lol! Could be a air temp altitude change also.
