1st gen. 2.7l vs 2nd gen. 2.7l

Are these the same engine, or are there different specs? What does the first gen. 2.7l look like?

 

3rzfe is 1st gen engine
2trfe is 2nd gen

Too many specs to list so just search them, but they are built off same design. Irreverent performance/mpg wise since the 2trfe having more hp is in a larger and heavier vehicle.

 

One of the differences between the two engines is the current 2.7 (2TR-FE) has hydraulic valve lash adjustment, while the older 2.7 (3RZ-FE) uses shim over bucket valve adjustment.

 

Another difference is that the newer 2TR-FE uses variable valve timing (VVT-i).

 

Bringing back an old thread to ask, so if I had access to a 2nd gen 2.7L tacoma would the engine swap into a 1st gen tacoma without much trouble (assuming I would swap all the engine wiring with it)? Is the automatic transmission in the 1st gen controlled by a separate module or is it controlled by the main engine management computer? I'm looking at a badly wrecked 2010 truck but it is a manual transmission where as I have an automatic.
