gas consumption

hello,

my '04, sr5, 4-cyl. taco seems to be getting poor gas mileage.

i have 20k on the engine, drive 50/50 street and freeway and just put in iridium spark plugs. when i can afford it i use chevron gas, when i can't i use arco with a separate additive.

is there any way to get better mileage or is that "wishful thinking"?

I noticed a recent drop in milage, however my tires were also lower. Readjusting the air pressure has helped, along with a new air filter. Good luck

 

Like someone mentioned above, what mpg are you actually getting? I have a little over 2k miles on my 09 and I'm getting 21 mpg pretty steadily now. I don't do much highway driving at all though.

People usually say that your mileage will go up as temps get warmer. I think they use different gas in certain places as well.

 

my 02 xtra cab 4banger auto 4x4 got 26mpg all day long. thats alot better than my 16mpg i get with my 08 dclb 4x4

 

I have a 02 PreRunner TRD, 4cyl, 2wd, automatic and get about 17 or 18 city and that is short frequent trips. I did calculate about 26mpg on the hwy once. I had it on cruise at 70mph for about 300 miles and stopped maybe once. Not too shabby.

 

Im looking at 12, if i tune for E-85

 

Just took a round trip from Toledo to Cincinnati with my '09 Access 2.7 2WD Auto with 4,000 miles on it and got 24mpg. Lot's better than my old Cherokee.

 

i normally get 21-23 mpg, with my 4cyl., i would think that a 2wd would get better mpg than a 4X4, but i dunno! is ur truck stick or auto? try a new air filter, welcome to TW btw!

 

I get about 18 mpg but I could get 20 if I drove more efficiently and lowered my shift points but whats the fun in that

 

A lot of places oxygenate the gas in the winter. It decreases fuel economy. I would expect the OP to be getting over 20 easily.

 

I've gotten as high as 27 highway, summer gas and easy on the foot. We have winter gas now and I doubt 23 is possible.

 

The biggest mileage killers are short trips, cold weather (can't tell where the OP lives), under-inflated tires, and the ol' lead-foot mod. My lifestyle and work situation causes me to take lots of short trips, and I live in a cold part of the country, so my mileage this time-of-the-year is not great. It does get better in the summer.

 

I have a 4 cylinder taco, with CAI, and modded exhuast (gutted cats, magnaflow muffler, 2 1/2" pipe) and I get around 26 mpg on the highway when Im driving right, I can also go as low as 15 mpg when Im haulin ass, and doing burnouts everywhere! So the 4 cyl is great on gas if you can drive it right, best shifts seem to be bewtween 2500-3000 prm

 

low your RPM and change oil filter, also probably change your rims for a bigger/

i'm getting better milage in the colder weather! street & freeway 19-24mpg.
i keep tire pressure at what is printed on the tires.
don't need a new air filter yet.
shift at 25/27k, manual transmission.
LARGER rims/tires???

Odd that you'd get better mileage in cold weather......not sure what your definition of "cold" is, but my guess there would be that in 'warm' weather you may be running the AC a lot, and that reduces mileage also.

Edit: If you're getting between 19 and 24 mpg, you're doing just fine.

 

"cold" for this time of year in southern california near the ocean is in the 50's.

since i've had my "taco" the a/c has been used ONCE (and that was by a friend who was too hot with the windows open).
i'm aware of the use of the a/c and milage (also the lack of power in my small engine), when i drive to corona i'm in the number four lane with the semi's (ROFL) !

 

HMM havent had any problems with lack of power, I make merges onto the highways just find, and have no problem manuevering, and climbing modest inclines at 130 km/h, although I like to just cruise at around 120 km/h myself!!!!
