My '98 Tacoma is a small 2.4L 4-cyl with problem after problem. It has over 200k on it, so i was thinking of changing out for a new crate motor, but i was wanting the bigger 4-cyl that Toyota offers for my truck. Does anyone know if its compatible with the current transmission, or would i have to replace the transmission as well as the front & rear suspension?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

That's weird. That combination seems to be one of the more bulletproof here. Some member have reported they're at 600k miles and still driving to work. Have you considered a complete rebuild?

Unfortunately I can't help much with your question though other than look into a 2RZ-FE to 3RZ-FE swap.

    Hello & thanks :)

I mean, I can still drive it to work no problem, but it's getting to the point where everything is breaking down. The exhaust has fallen apart, starter, alternator, battery cables...

I was thinking of rebuilding, but I don't want to re-hone or resurface.

But what about the condition of the motor itself?

Its going to be a lot more work to swap an engine than to replace the things you listed...

I havent gotten down & dirty with the engine yet. No major problems like a rod knockinv or anything, i just want a little more power out of my truck.

TRD made a supercharger for your engine. I don't know if they still do. Paradise Racing also make a bunch of performance parts for the 2RZ-FE. You could also ask in the 1st gen section to see what others have done.

A crate motor isn't going to replace anything but the motor.

"The exhaust has fallen apart, starter, alternator, battery cables..." That's just normal maintenance at your truck age and mileage.. You don't need a motor you just want more power. Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just sell it and get a 6 cyl Tacoma ?
