So I was thinking about getting a 4 cylinder access cab 4x4 taco but my only question is can it hold up to some bigger tires no bigger then 33in and some off roading.

Yes the 4 cylinder can handle 33s quite easily actually that's what I have and it's a nice setup but you may have to make sure you have the right gearing and maybe end up upgrading your clutch to handle the tires alittle bit better. I'm getting ready to upgrade to a marlin crawler clutch kit and flywheel. Good luck.

Your rear axle has gears in it when you put larger tires on its harder to turn them. So changing the gears helps you run larger tires with little to no change on how the truck drives.

Yes. A new set up third is about 700 to 800

Check the stricker in the drivers side door and see what your gear is now. My 4cyl 4x4 came with 4.56 gears and it's not too bad. But going up obviously would help, just can't pay for that now. But I've grown used to it.

On a closed course both loaded down win camp gear (monte weighed way more) I and a v6 5spd 1st gen drag raced and we both topped out at like 85 ha. And it took forever to get there.

TLDR: yes it can handle it, it's just slow

Yes, but don't worry about it. You'll be just fine on 33"s.

Basics are, as the tires get larger it takes more "torque" to turn them. By going to a "taller" gear (higher ratio) you are allowing the engine to provide more of it's torque to the wheels. Once you get your truck you can look at the information on it to find the current gear ratio, and then figure out where you need to go from there.

It really depends on what size, and what brand. I would suggest that if you have never done it, or seen it done, take it to a shop. If you get a 4WD you will have to change out both front and rear. If you just have a 2WD you only have rear gears.

I would say that on average you would be looking at somewhere between $550-700 each axle. Again that is dependent on labor rate, and the gears that you get.

took out over load leaf spring, double chamber magna flow, Pink emblem, took off most Decals, 4inch fagtech, 4k HIDs, two 10 p1 rockford fostgate. Aftermarket head unit. 3.73 to a 4.10 gearing, Plasti dip the sides, customized headliner, added a flag mount and slapped on a dirtlawz decal
I took my diff out of axel and took it to yota masters in corona and they upgraded me for 300... If you take them the truck it's more expensive but it's so easy to take it out

Yeah just labor to press the gears into place. I'm not sure what you mean by a kit, they had the gears n only charged for the pressing. There is a link to a form on here on "how to" take out your diff on a first gen. I can send it to you

They charged you $300 to change out just the gears?:eek::eek:

Wow, I only charge $300 for the rear diff of a Tacoma when I do the ENTIRE job. That includes removing and reinstalling the 3rd.

    My experience:
    05 access cab 2.7 5 speed w/ 285/70/17's

The truck drove fine around town but once it got off road and into some muck I would have to slip the clutch a lot in 4H from a stop. I found myself going into 4L quite a bit to save the clutch. The 4 cylinder 5 speeds come with 4.11's, if I kept the truck I was thinking about going with at least 4.56's if not 4.88's.
