Yes, that's the way it's done on the 6 cyl engine. The 4 cyl has it's filter in a different location.

Sorry to rehash a old thread but this has been most helpful as im about to do my first ever oil change. So, is it best to take the filter off before or after you drain the oil? And why?

^^^On the 2.7 I take the filter off first, just because. You'll need a filter wrench and not a universal one. You need the 64mm, 14 slat oil filter wrench. I got mine at Advanced Auto for four or five dollars.

Oh. Also, what do you do with your used motor oil?

Is the Fumoto valve that much of a benefit on the 4-cyl, where the filter will make a mess anyway and have oil run down your forearm? :p

Yeah, just hand tight. Most auto parts stores have recycling tanks. I just pour it from the catch pan back into the new empty oil jugs and take it to Autozone.

I have a couple of buddies with garages, and I take my truck there with oil/filter/etc that I buy, usually alternating shops.

While I wait for the engine to cool enough to change the oil, I work on their computer issues for free.

Then I change the oil using mostly my tools and such, but their floor jacks/creeper/disposal of old oil service.

    Works out well for both.

I actually take mine to Advanced Auto they let me walk to the back and pour it in the tank, but I have to take the empty jugs with me. I don't mind since I'd have to throw them away even if I had a "dedicated oil jug". I didn't know WM took used oil.

If there isn't one handy when I get home from work tomorrow, I'll go outside and take some above/below pics for ya. I've got the manual 2.7.

Lets open this thread again just for fun! :goingcrazy: Use the dip stick! Not everyone is draining the same amount of oil during oil changes. Some people on here say they let in drain over night, others may drain for 5 mins. The more/longer you drain the more oil you need to add. Use the damn dip stick.

The drain plug on my 2.7 is facing straight down. When I remove the drain plug it empties with such force that it splatters all over the garage floor from the catch pan below. I never owned a vehicle with such a dumb location of the drain plug.

My peeve is the filter on the 2.7. Almost unpossible to not get oil all over the frame if you aren't on a lift.

The filter is the only messy part for me, but it's not bad. It's probably good for your frame.:D

A fumoto drain valve makes the job so much easier. Next time I do my oil change I am going to use some ramps to give me extra room underneath. Should make getting to the oil filter a lot easier.

When I change mine at a buddy's shop with a full lift and telescoping collect cans (on wheels!), I don't spill a drop basically.

Out in the driveway without jacking? Yer gettin' wet, son.

Fumitory valves are the way to go. Flip it open and walk away for 15 minutes.

The only way I have found to keep from making a mess with the filter is to use a walmart bag to take it off (kind of like picking up dog poop).
