Only 2 mpg more?

I bought my Tacoma with the 4 cyl, 5 speed, 4 wd and access cab. Many on here have said the 4 cyl is a bad choice getting only 2 mpg more than the V6.

Well, if I do the math using 1 tank of fuel a week that's an extra 40 miles. And 1 step further at 52 weeks in a year that comes to 2,080 miles.

Sort of puts things more in perspective.

 

Still not worth it even slightly, id much rather take the power increase of the V6

Having owned both, I'm seeing a 3-4 mpg difference - but the V6 is worth it.

 

I'm a cheapskate who loves to be frugal, so the simple no frills economical 4 cylinder 5 lug appeals to me. Not only was it cheap to buy (2012, 19k cash out the door) it's also cheap to drive. It's currently averaging 23.9 mpg on the cheapest regular 87 octane winter blend gas I can buy.

 

I got the v6 because I got the double cab and the 4 cylinder is underpowered

 

And don't forget that its cheaper to maintain also!

I also think 4x4 vs Prerunner is often left out of MPG discussions.

It really just depends on what you need to use it for. For many of us the 4 cyl is all that is needed. It suits me fine, and I use it to tow a boat even.

I agree that a big heavy frame with big heavy offroad tires would bog a 4 cylinder down.

 

Exactly! If I had gotten the access cab I would have looked at the 4 banger seeing as it gets good fuel economy but let's be honest it would be better if Toyota updated it already. It just needs about 20 more horsepower and it would get better fuel economy since it had the power to haul along the weight of the taco.

 

My reg cab has a v6 it may be the 3.slow, but a v6 is a v6

 

On the dyno, my 2.7 gets 18 more horsepower and 27 more foot pounds of torque over the stock engine. And it was done just with some simple bolt on intake and exhaust mods and no tuning.

 

My 2.7 does all I need it to do.

 

Try going from a 5.4L V8 to a 2.7L I4, the mileage increase is amazing

When I sold my F150, I was specifically looking for a 2.7L. The V8 power was nice but truthfully, I never really used it to its full potential. Other than a few trips hauling yards of dirt and pulling a full size out of a snow bank, it was a waste of engine and gas.

The 2.7L is going to meet 99.9% of my needs throughout the year and its a simpler engine than the V6 so its worth it to me. YMMV

 

I just went from a 5.7 v8 GTO that was sucking 15.4 MPG to my 2.7 that is giving me 22.6 MPG.
I travel a lot to work and back (with no load) saving a ton of money. I love the double cab, does just what I need it to do.

On a side note, for what ever reason insurance is also much cheaper on the Taco than the GTO. Like $25 less a month cheaper.

 

I bought my 2011 Tacoma Double Cab in November of 2013. I filled it right up and zeroed out my trip odometer. I got 550 km to that tank of gas. I ran it after the guage showed empty. I did the same thing last week, same type of fuel, same driving and I only got 450 km from that tank of gas. The air filter and oil have been changed a few weeks back. I don't understand what happened. Can anyone shed some light on this.?

 

Many things such as driving habits and air temp. You originally ran it in November and got a second set of numbers in February. I'm willing to bet there there was a significant drop in air temp. Also, unless you drove the exact same route, one data point isn't going to tell you much. I'd suggest you keep track of it over several tanks and average it out.

 

It was warmer in November here in the Niagara Region. We've had a bitterly cold winter here. Thanks for replying. The dealership told me to run some high test, 91 octane every third or fourth fill up. I'll give that a try.
