2TR-FE powerboost mod

While cruising around recently on a hot Texas day, I came up with probably the best performance mod yet... power boost. It really helps out with the highway merge in heavy traffic.

Never had a problem with the 2.7's power in my regular cab 5spd. The gas milage sucks though. Getting the same with a dcsb v6 2wd offroad.

Yeah, its adequate... I would buy it again.

Better hold onto the 4x4 reg cab, going to be a prized item soon.

I've a "new to me" 4x4 reg cab coming and am happier than a pig in dung.
Can't wait to modify.

That's what I did.
And here are the dyno results:

Stock:
119hp @ 5,200 rpm
133 ftlbs @ 3,800 rpm

Mine:
137hp @ 4,600 rpm
160 ftlbs @ 2,900 rpm

Those are gains of 15% more horsepower and 20% more torque, with both peaks reached at lower rpms than stock. This was done on a stock engine with just simple bolt on mods, running regular 87 octane pump gas, and with no tuning.

It's a lot more than just two items...
Those results were only possible from the cumulative effect of a large combination of mods all working together, however each one was simple in itself. I did dyno tests to impartially quantify the actual results, as "butt dyno" impressions are subjective.

I'll list everything I've done to the truck and what it cost me:

235/60/16 low rolling resistance Yokohama YK580 tires $450
Rota RB lightweight 16x7 +35 offset 8 spoke alloy wheels $600
MagnaFlow 22 inch muffler $65
Custom built mandrel bent exhaust $300
LCE long tube header $475
tooter intake manifold spacer $0
Injen warm air intake $220
Removed air conditioning and pulleys $0
Removed power steering and pulleys $0
Short simple drive belt for water pump and alternator $20

Total cost: $2,130

My truck is used as a service vehicle and is always fully loaded down with tools and materials. I also work in a rural area where I'm constantly crawling up and down steep winding roads in first gear. In fact the majority of my driving doesn't get beyond third gear.

With this intended use in mind, I did everything I could to enhance low rpm torque, and not for top end or off road performance which is useless in a work truck. But even under these bad driving conditions, it still averages 23 mpg.
