Idle Shake

I've noticed that my Tacoma shakes at idle when its in Drive, it usually happens when I'm in a stoplight, after a few seconds the truck starts shaking you can feel it trough the leg and the seat and it goes away when shifting to Neutral. The truck only has 340 miles, I will obviously take it to the dealer for warranty, but I want to know first if someone else has experienced this problem and what was done to fix it.

I had this problem on an '85 Tercel and it turned out to be a disconnected vacuum line.

 

The shake is not extreme, but enough to make it annoying. I will check the vacuum lines, but Im not sure if the shake is from the engine or from somewhere else.

 

Took it for a ride today, I think I'm just being to picky, I think is like you said about the lower idle speed, because it doesn't do it with the A/C on only with the A/C off since the rpm tend to be a bit lower with A/C off. I will ask once I take it for maintenance just to be sure, but otherwise I think this is normal.

Maybe I'm just looking for excuses to ride around more with it

 

We have a few 07 2.7 reg cab autos at work, and they shake like you describe. But i have an 07 2.7 access cab auto and it does not shake at all. i wonder what is different.

 

4 cylinder engines are naturally unbalanced. This is my second Toyota, and I have noticed their 4 cyls vibrate more than say a Honda. The price you pay to actually have some torque. Annoying yes, a problem, not likely.....

 

Not to mention our 4 bangers are 2.7 LITERS, they will have their own particular harmonic. Balance shafts, engine mounts, and harmonic balancers can only remove so much of the vibration. It's still a really smooth running engine for it's size.

 

Toyota did a great job with the engine, the domestics could learn a thing or two from Honda and Toyota when building their 4 bangers. I've driven Ford products, '98 escort, '99 ranger, '00 focus with displacements of 2.0-2.5L and all were thrashy engines, they work well but not very polished especially in the upper rpm ranges. I just picked up an '05 civic with the 1.7L mill and it's a night and day difference, comparing the honda to the ford sedans. I can see why ford lost their ass in the econo box price range, the same 1.7L in the '05 was first used in '01.

 

I think you are being picky too. Any 4cyl I have had shook at idle. Even more so when in gear since you are putting a load on it and the backside of that load is everything connected to the motor, so you are going to feel it a bit.

I'd say its normal. Even my 4.0 shakes a little bit.

Its a brand new truck. Probably nothing wrong with it.

 

I'm having this same issue with my '97 2.4L automatic with 103k miles - it idles fine when cold, but when warm the shake develops about 5 seconds after coming to a stop & it goes away when shifting to neutral.

The truck does not have a/c so it's not a compressor cycling issue.

I've checked the vacuum lines and they all seem good so I'm looking for guidance on where to look next. Thanks for your help!

 

mine doesnt flinch or shake even the slightest. used to a little bit with the ac on and idle it would jump up to 1100 rpm and the fan made it shake but then i changed my cabin air filter and idle with the ac stays at 700 rpm and no shaking or trembling at all.

 

I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma that shakes when idling at a stop,but when I turn on the AC with the fan on the shaking goes away. Could my minimum idle speed be set to low,and if so how can I speed it up slightly? I had it checked twice buy the dealer and he said everything is in spec and I should just live with it, I had all new engine mounts installed but there was no difference. Thank you.

 

that happend to me i was waiting for a train to pass the road felt a weird shake got out a vacum line came loose grabed a vip tie out of the truck stuck it back on good to go.

 

damn haha it came back. it goes away when the clutch is engaged though!?
