I know there are more than a few threads floating around about gas mileage.
Just wondering what people with the I4 engines are getting?

    Mines about 15-19 city/21-25 hwy.

I have about 3k miles, 07 tacoma access cab 4x4.

I have the v6 but from what i hear your mileage will improve as your engine breaks in. i think 007tacoma (one of the mods) said his broke in around 4 or 5k miles. Is that right 007 or am i off?

    BTW, welcome to TW!

That's right - about 4K to 5K miles on the odo and the truck began seeing 20+ MPG. The best I have gotten was 28, but I haven't been able to get over 25 consistently. The difference is that I have a PreRunner (I wish it was a 4x4).

I am performing a number of tests to see how certain things affect gas mileage. Right now I am testing the ECO Systems ECO-1 VPE (Link in signature). Maverick491 and I will be doing a report on it soon.

Your mileage is pretty good for a 4x4. surfponto has an AccessCab I4 4x4 as well. I think he gets close to what you get. I believe that Mudbug's Tacoma is a Regular Cab 4x4 I4. I think he gets better mileage than I do. gm3bow's truck is the one I am watching for mileage. With the standard suspension, I4, tons of driving, and excellent mods (including exhaust); his truck should get the best mileage out of all of the I4s.

"charcoal air filter out (secondary air filter), and an AFE drop-in performance air filter"

Not sure what you mean by AFE Drop-in? Is that in place of the stock primary air filter? What is the function of the secondary air filter? I'm guessing it cleans smaller particles before the air reaches the engine?

The AFE drop-in is a High-Flow replacement for the stock air filter. If you go this route, I would choose the dry foam filter.

The secondary "charcoal" filter is to prevent vapor escape after shutdown of the engine. It is an emissions filter. It is located just inside the air intake. For pictures and instructions, check this out...

Hi, I have an '06 Reg cab standard, I4, 26K, about 50 miles a day city/hwy-30/65%...5% logging roads, with a Leer canopy on the bed. I get pretty consistently 27.4-27.9 mpg.
Highway speeds 55-75, air on 25% of the time. I do not accelerate hard and keep the air in the tires at optimum. I believe the canopy helps reduce drag, even though it increases weight.

Lately I have been getting about 21mpg average but i've been working 70-80 hours a week and i'm stressed and i've been driving like a pissed off teenager most of those miles are probably at around 90mph maybe faster.

Now when i'm in a normal mood and I only go 70. I've gotten as good as 26.5mpg. I usually average about 25 with mixed highway city though.

    Its a regular cab 4x4.

Haha I just realized something. I quoted that pissed off teenager comment...but wait i'm allowed to do that i'm only 19! :p

Hey 007 you know I don't know if you've ever taken this into consideration or not, but you do realize you have 4.10 gears in that pre-runner don't you? Just thought i'd point that out. The pre runners have the same rear end as the 4x4 so that will hurt you mileage a bit...(but help your acceleration :) )

So, what rear end do the standard suspensions have?

I forgot...its in the factory brochure/bulletin. I want to say 3:53's but don't quote me on it.

    Holy CRAP!

No wonder the V6's are getting such good gas mileage - according to the Toyota website, the V6 (Access Cab and Double Cab) have a 3.73 rear end. The regular suspension 4 cylinders get a 3.31 (manual) and a 3.58 (automatic). So I have the highest gear ratio out of all of them (4.10). No wonder it is so hard for me to hit 27 MPG. :(

Oh well, at least it has some damn good power. ;)

Yeah...those 4.10's will make a big difference taking off.

It seems the consensus is that gas mileage will improve on a new truck after 4 or 5 thousand miles.

    Thanks for the answers.

I have 1,700 miles on my 2.7 manual and I'm consistently getting 28.3 to 29.5 mpg @ 70 mph. At 60 I get well above 32 mpg but I can't drive that slow without a cruise control.

    These are highway mpg readings.

    Manual tranny tips:

Tip #1: Shift between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm for all gears.
    Tip #2: Don't accelerate hard
Tip #3: There seems to be dramatic drag increase for every 5 mph
increase over 60 mph. Temperature, GPH, LOD, and MPG readings
    with ScanGaugeII coroborate this.

Well crunching the #'s comparing apples to apples 4cyl manual pre runner vs. standard suspenion the effective gear ratios in each gear are such.

    Standard: 1st=13.07 2nd=7.08 3rd=4.57 4th=3.31 5th=2.81 26.9” tall tires

    Prerunner: 1st=16.20 2nd=8.77 3rd=5.66 4th=4.10 5th=3.84 30.5” tall tires

This is of course assuming that the calculator @ http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html is correct.

So the effective gear ratio is lower even taking tire diameter into effect.

Prerunner wheels tires and brakes will also be heavier though which needs the additional gearing to compensate for the additional unsprung weight. This would allow the Prerunner to accelerate & climb grades as good if not better than the standard version.

That is an impressive comparison. As I don't have time to check your numbers, I am going to take your word on it. Thanks for taking the time.

I will tell you this much: I test drove both the standard version and the PreRunner version of the 2.7L AccessCabs. I did notice that the PreRunner accelerated a bit better off the line, but once you get to highway speeds (70+) it lugs a bit more. That is where the 2.7L really suffers - the top end. The standard suspension had plenty get-up-and-go, but it really shined at highway speeds.

On the PreRunner (2.7L) the low end is phenomonal compared to any other 4 cylinder truck I have owned. I guess all that gearing really does make a huge difference. I wish now that I had gotten a 4WD so that I could use this low end torque off road.

Oh well, guess I will just have to be satisfied with a Detroit TruTrac Limited Slip Differential.

I have an 08 reg. cab 4x4 with 4k miles and I've been getting 20-21 MPG in town. I hope the MPG gets better after a break-in period, cause I've been getting that mileage since it was new. I usually upshift around 3000 rpm.
