Rock Sliders are better than side steps (in my opinion) just more versatile. I'm very happy with my Rock Sliders :D

I think it depends on what you are planning to really use them for.

Bingo. No need for sliders if you don't wheel, unless you want some door ding protection. :)

Before I installed sliders, I used Smittybilt Sure Steps for a few years. They were true bolt-ons and worked pretty well. Looked good, and had non-slip pads in them that really helped my height-challenged wife to get in and out of the truck. They provided excellent grocery cart protection :D, and even fended off a couple of minor rock intrusions while off-roading  .

I sold them after I got the sliders. Here's a photo taken a year ago:

Very true, I had some smittys on previous wrangler. Good door protection and stepping platform. Tried the hi-lift on them one day, just for kicks, and before I got tires off the ground a bolt sheared from the frame flew out and hit me in the leg. I never tried that again, or replaced the bolt
