Just bought a 2012, 4x4, 4 cylinder. The clutch has started to creak, especially when going from a dead stop. It didn't do it during the test drive, or I wouldn't have bought the damn thing. I have low tolerance for creaks, groans, and rattles. It has 34k miles. Can anyone help save the small scrap of sanity I'm hanging onto?

    nope, get used to it

At least from what I have researched

If it makes you feel better, my chevy had some metal rattling around somewhere near the firewall.. My dad had the truck for 3 years and I had it for 2.. Traded that thing in and never did find the source lol

If i'm not mistaken there's 2 differnet issues: the throwout bearing "squeak" in the 6 speed and the "creak" in the 5 speed. I have a 5-speed and lubing the clutch pedal assembly and other parts that i don't know the names of under the dash resolved my "creak". Mine also only happens when it's hot outside.

i'm not sure what it is. today it was super hot but mine didn't creak at all. it's something that happens only if the weather is just right. it's hot when it happens but it has something to do with other factors as well. maybe the humidity and so forth.

I have had opposite luck: my 6spd had the creak, but my 5spd never has - it has the squeak!

The creak was more annoying to me. At least the squeak goes away when the tranny gets warmed up.

Does rotating the plastic plunger part behind the clutch pedal back and forth a little bit help on the 5 speed creak? I was forever doing it on the 6 speed. It must help spread the grease around because it would make the creak go away for 2-4 weeks.

There's a little cylinder/barrel under the dash that's part of the clutch pedal linkage(i think that's what it's called) that I rotated about a quarter turn to the right BY HAND in addition to the grease, and my clutch hasn't creaked for a good while now, even in the Georgia heat.

I take it back. Mine creaks too when conditions are right. It was loud today.

Wait until it gets older and starts doing this though

Whoa that is really loud. And that is from the OUTSIDE. Mine does it, but the sound is coming from either the linkages surrounding the clutch pedal or the plunger behind it. Might have to crawl under and take a look at the clutch assembly. If I remember correctly there are pivot points down there as well that could need lube.

I've had the clutch slave cylinder off many times trying different kinds of grease where it meets the fork. Nothing lasts more than a few days. It gets washed out in a hurry. Tried moly, three different brands of lithium, dry teflon lube, heck I even tried car wax.

Can't effectively grease the fork pivot ball without pulling the transmission, but most of the noise doesn't come from there.

Whenever someone asks me what's that noise, I just tell them what most of us have been told about various annoyances from you know who: it's a normal characteristic of the vehicle, or it's operating as designed.

I have heard on 1st gens the spring wears through plastic bushing that holds it tight. So when you push on it the spring is rubbing on steel causing it to creak. I would look at it and press clutch in with your hand multiple times to identify where it is comming from. If it's not rubbing through try white lithium grease . It doesn't smell I use it on m y door hinges especially in winter. Use it sparingly little bit goes long way.

If your truck makes noises turn the radio up louder.

(IROH) I just listened to that noise that doesn't s sound like a normal characteristic mine is a 96 .clutch has been replaced once and it doesn't have any kind of sound close to that mine has small squeak from clutch pedal. Yours ssounds like steel on steel like somethings not lined up .

Yes, steel on steel somewhere. Unfortunately putting grease on the slave pushrod ball makes the noise go away completely - until it rains.

Although the weird part is that the noise also completely disappears after the truck has been run for half an hour or more.

I gave up on it a while ago. If the tranny finally explodes, the most of the clutch components will get changed out anyways.

Try using a white lithium grease or something for wet environments they make some that works better for equipment spud plants don't wash off to easily.

yeah mine isn't on the outside. it's under the clutch pedal on the inside. it's the little rod thing. you can turn it all the way to the right and it stops but it will work it's way back to the left over time. it only happens 1-2 times a year when it gets really hot outside. the rest of the year it's fine. i've sprayed it before with wd-40 or something and it helps.
