How bad is the highway driving with a 2.7/auto RC 4x4 with 285/75-16s?? Is there any "passing power" left??

    Thanks.

i wouldn't put anything over 265/75/16 on the 4 cylinder without regearing.

If you want 33s with a 4 cylinder..... NO Just NO! get a v6 if you want 33s I would suggest you go with 32s only.

You can run 33's you'll notice the power loss for sure, if you want the most out of them I would regear.

Regear a 2.7 Taco and you should be fine.

I believe 4.0s have 3.73 gears. MPGs are going to be very low without regearing.

I'm no stranger to regearing, but I was hoping that I wouldn't have to since the RC 2.7 comes with 4.10s. I really wish they offered the RC with a 6cyl. Probably just have to stick to 265s.
    Thanks, fellas.

Really? I ran 33's on my first truck when I was 16 years old, was a '92 Hilux, 22RE, 5Spd manual. Yeah it was slow, no passing power, speedo would fall the other way when you hit a hill on the highway, but it got around.

2.7L has like 44 more hp than the old 22RE trucks, also don't we have 4.10's stock on 4x4's and PreRunners?

it can be done but it's just not a good idea.

it just takes away your power and lowers your mpg's.

if you want to run bigger tires than 32" you should regear.

Especially if the truck is going to see pavement for the majority of the time you drive it.

    weezer,

What size are you running?? I've got the Ivan Stewart wheels also, but I think I'm gonna have the "spokes" of the wheels powdercoated in gunmetal grey.

    Oz,
I like the idea of the 255s, just not sure how much lift I'll need for those. Planning 2.5-3" up front. I DO NOT want to chop the cab mounts.

Basically same diameter as the 285's you were asking about but less likely to rub

I've got 285's and an auto. Feels no different than 265s. Obviously isn't a race car but the feeling of power loss is blown out of proportion on these forums IMO. I also still get between 18-20 mpg in the city and 21-23 on the highway, most likely because the rpms are now lower for the same given speed.

Given you're at sea level, I would go for it. I'm also at sea level.. I don't regret getting the 285's one bit. You dont get any of the HP loss that people in higher elevations get.

i've got 265/70/16 bridgestone dueler a/t revos when i first got the wheels about 45K miles ago since that was recommended size to use by toyota.

it turns out it's too small though. when going 55mph on the speedo you are actually only going about 53.5mph or something like that.

it's about time to buy a new set as they are almost worn out so i'm going with 1 size bigger this time.

    265/75/16

thinking of going with cooper discoverer at3 tires since they are pretty cheap to buy.

    http://www.treaddepot.com/tire/9000...ive=47917384101&device=c&matchtype=&network=g

you can go 285's they just cost more money to buy. 265's are expensive enough as it is.

i have a manual tranny though not an auto. i have the front end lifted up 1 1/2" higher than stock using OME 883 lifting springs and bilstein 5100 shocks on all 4 corners. front ones are set a 0" setting.

The 255s would be lighter and help out but Ive ran 35s and 33s. Its still driveable but not fast by any means. But it wasnt to begin with. If you normally drive 80 on the highway its not for you. But I also have a 5 speed so my truck has a little better acceleration.
