Was curious how tight most folks install their spin-on oil filter? IE how far do you twist it after it gets snug by hand? Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I've always driven cars with canister oil filters... :D

Nice link. I have always used purolator pureone, primarily from test results/price. K&N or Mobil1 are my secondary choices.

About 1/2 a turn after it snugs, just enough to be good & tight. That way it never leaks & you can get it off by hand next time. No fuss, no mess.

Thanx! Also, is there actually a gasket used with the oil pan drain plug? When I removed the drain plug, there appeared to be a blue gasket. But it was stuck so tight to the oil pan it seemed a part of it. Being my very 1st oil change I just left it alone instead of trying to pry it off, especially since I had no replacement handy. I used a Wix(#51348) oil filter, which does not supply a new gasket. If it is indeed separate, guess I'll replace it next time. I assume you buy them at a Toyota dealer, do you all really replace them every time? :D

The dealer sells them for a buck (!) a piece (98 cents, i think) and claims to change them each oil change they do at the dealership.

Don't know that every time is necessary, but they probably do due to liability and the fact they are much cheaper for the dealer that the at the mark ups we see.

Actually almost all instructions on oil filters tell you to turn it 3/4 to 1 full turn after gasket touches the sealing surface. I personally rarely just hand tighten unless it is an unusual filter like Purolator Pure one where it has that real handy non-slip outer surface for this purpose. Otherwise I put an oil filter socket at the end of it and use my rachet handle to tighten it. the torque is based on my own experience, not too tight where I actually have to put much effort into it, jut "goodentight" as they say in German:).

Yeah, goodentight, I don't actually measure how much of a turn it is, simply tighten it where it won't leak & you don't have to crush it to get it off. Hand, wrench, whichever...based off own experience. Nothing scientific needing micro specs......

I just purchased a Fram tough guard oil filter for 07 4.0l PreRunner. One thing I noticed right off the bat is, it is about a 1/4 inch shorter than the filter on the truck now, which is an OEM filter #90915, to that means less capacity.
I have never been a big fan of Fram filters. errr But the closest dealer to where I live is about 45 miles away. errr again.

Ok so, my question I guess is, has anyone experienced this with Fram filters and is there a capacity difference?

    Thanks
    Dave

    Dave,

There's a lot of info on Fram filters on this site (and you'll find links for more reading) - general consensus is to stay away from them. The popular choices are Toyota, Mobil 1, WIX, and K&N. I've been using Mobil myself.

Me too (those three) usually. Using a TRD at the moment though.

The Extended Guard they make is the only Fram I would use, but IMO, even that one costs more than better filters.
Purolator or PureONE, Bosch Premium, K&N, Mobil 1 Ext. Performance, Wix/NAPA Gold, or something by Toyota...Denso or TRD.
Even Super-Tech from Wally World (or the STP clone) in a pinch.
    Those are my choices.

Thanks Guys. This really sucks not having a dealer close by. I think I will give Purolator a try. I know they are a good quality filter.

You might as well get the PureOne. For not much more money than the regular Purolator filter you'll get one of the best performing filters out there. The older ones are blue and the newer ones are yellow with a grip coating.

And the new yellow ones have an even better rating, and seem to have improved flow by a large margin, than the old blue ones.

Me? Until the gasket touches, then 3/4 to 1 more turn.
    (Unless the filter says otherwise.)

Ive used the BOSCH oil filters on both my '89 toyota truck (230k miles) and '01 Taco Prerunner (112k) with great results... Anyone else use the same filter?

Wow, I guess the guy at the parts counter at my Dealer is doing me a good deal. Whenever I buy a filter from him, I ask for a Oil Plug Gasket and he throws one of those black ones in for free. Last month Toyota mailed me a $20 off $50 coupon, so I picked up 10 Toyota 90915-YZZD3 filters and 10 gaskets and only paid $34.10.

Same as PureONE, yes I've used them they're very good. (Bosch owns Purolator)

    Nice!

I ended up getting the Pure One. No problems great filter but, I still notice it is a little shorter than the OEM Toyota filter. I didn't measure but, I would guess about a 1/4 inch shorter. That to me means lower capacity. As soon as I can, I am going to head out to the Toyota dealer and get some OEM filters, they sent me a coupon $3.99 ea. no limit. :)
