line the box with the lid open,so you know it won't hit the cap.go to the hardware store and get self tapping bolts.have someone hold down the box while installing.campertop you should make sure you put the gasket on the campertop side(not the bed of your truck.and clamp it down with campertop clamps.check back door to make sure it opens properly.

Question for you guys about the AFE Pro Dry.....As previously stated, the AFE Pro Dry only goes up to year 2009. I have a 2011 with the 4.0 in it. Does anyone know with any certainty if the one for the 2009 will fit in my 2011?

i have a 2.7 with the factory power chip for towing and extra power.after i put a k/n filter.and right away i could tell my power went up.oil change every 3500.and every six tanks of fuel i put lucas oil gas additive and injecter cleaner.my machanic said he has never seen a cleaner engine.to get to the point.there is no need to go over 3000rpm's and coast to a stop.and take care of your toyota and it will take care of you!

I have a 2008 Access cab 2.7 with manual transmission I've had for 2 months now (replaced my 97 with frame rust Toyo bought back). I just took a 300 mile trip which included 15 miles of city/urban driving. I averaged 26.5 MPG which isn't bad considering the weather was cold, wet, and windy. I have done nothing with the truck yet. I do plan on the mods I did on my 1st Gen Taco. K&N air filter (Or AFE) and synthetic trans and diff oil. I netted about a 3 MPG increase, especially in the winter, on my old truck. Hoping for the same in this one.

stay off the skinny pedal, accelerate slowly to top speed, clean your air filter, change your oil regularly, inflate your tires to slightly higher than spec, run your recommended octane gas, keep your windows up at high speeds, turn off a/c at low speeds, take out all the crap in the truck you don't need, change tranny, diff, oil to synthetic (RP, AMSOIL etc..)

if you have AAA, take out your spare tire LOL j/k.

1st post, been lurking here especially trying to figure out how to get better mileage.

I've got a '10 prerunner access cab 4cyl manual. Most of the reason I bought this config (vs. 6cyl auto) was the expectation I'd get the 26 mpg shown on my window sticker. Ha!

After break-in and oil changes using M1 0-20, I've been getting 21 or so mpg, 75% highway. Not quite 26, but I know I won't come close to 26 with a prerunner.

Anyway, I'm surprised nobody in this thread mentions aerodynamic improvements. I recently changed my oil, replaced air filter (I have not removed secondary filter -any day now I'll get to that), and trimmed my "dumbo ear" mud flaps down to a lengnth of 4" all around. Just filled up and got 22.1 mpg with a bit more city driving than normal.

Next on the list is figuring out how to fill in my fog light sockets and not have it look like a hack job. I don't need fog lights, and these 2 holes are like hanging a small bucket out each window from a drag standpoint. I'm thinking I can shape some styrofoam "plugs" or something like that. I may just tape them over & test mpg to see if it's a measurable improvement.

Great tips on this thread, keep 'em coming!

My mpg's pretty much stay at 25.5, it drops very slightly (25.3) when I get pushy on the pedal going up hills.

The Spike TV show "Trucks" ran a few episodes on their V8 Ram project and how to go from 8mpg to 16mpg with it.

You can see view the episodes for free on the spike site or search for it on tv.clicker.com. Lots of other fun episodes as well.

If I remember correctly they did:
    - Electric fan
    - Vacuum gauge (=scangauge / egg under the pedal mod)
    - Remove weight
    - Manual hub locks
    - Diff gearing
    - Some other stuff

    interesting...

Just signed up! How bad is it to only be getting 13MPG city? That's me alright. I bought my '09 4X4 manual with the borla exhaust already installed. I then put in a TRD CAI trying to get more power and better MPG. Didn't notice much on the MPG. I always wanted a lift and some tires so after a 3" toy-tec and 285/75R/16 Yokohama Geolander M/T My MPG dropped from about 15-16 to 14ish. ( I noticed a great decrease in power with the bigger M/T) I then put a supercharger on hoping the MPG would improve when I drive conservative, however it at 13MPG now. I've been reading alot trying to improve my MPG but haven't had much luck. I'm wondering if its the tires? the CAI on with the Super charger? or even possibly the S/C flash that toyota had to do? Any ideas would help. Thanks.

Tires equal more rotating mass therefore more work needed. tires indeed will do a number on gas mileage. cold air intakes do absolutely nothing except more noise. also depends on how your using the supercharger, if your in the truck gas will go down.

I have a 4 banger prerunner, 4" lift, weight adders, 33.1" tires with heavier than stock wheels on the stock 4.10 gear ratio and if I drive 65 on the freeway I can get 24-25 MPG.

the bigger tires don't only create more mass to turn. They also CHANGE THE GEARING of the truck and essentially make the final drive ratio higher (lower numerically). To test this, get on the interstate where you can run at least 5 miles uninterrupted. set your cruise at 60 (if traffic allows) and mark the time between mile markers. It should be 60 seconds, or 52 if you run 70 MPH. If you get to the next marker before that time, you have your answer. I put larger tires on a vehicle some years ago and it threw my speedo off 15%. That could effect your MPG calculations dramatically. If you got 16 before tires and now get 13.5, that your 15%. You can either then adjust your MPG calculations or get an adapter to put in your speedo cable to adjust the difference. FWIW....

from what i've read in off road adventures.you have to be very carefull on how big of tires you can have without changing the diff ratio.like if you have 33s and are pulling 2700rpms at 70mph.thats just way to high.my 2.7 with automatic 31s does a sweet 2100rpms,and get about 18mpg.

Thanks for the info. So in reality I'm probably getting close to the same since I haven't adjusted my speedo? One thing I did notice though is my speedo is off by about 2 MPH...even at 30MPH( I used one of those speed checkers on the side of the road to test it)

I just put an ARE on my '06 four and I love it. I went with ARE because of the windoors, google bajataco and check out his website, he has done an outstanding write up on his camper, it's what sold me.
