How long can I expect the transmission on my 98 2.7L to last? it has 132k miles on it now.

Long time is probably your only answer if not abused. 4wd?

Really though everybody usually gets 200k before problems become statistically significant.

I hope your W59 gives you many more miles of trouble-free service. Most do.

I have to overhaul my R155F at 146k. I can't rule out abuse by the first owner. I'm guessing he towed in 5th gear judging by the rather expensive dealer-installed tow package most four cylinders don't have.

just flush it and keep up with the maintenance and it'll go 132k more!

Yeah it's hard to wear something out that lives its whole life being lubricated, keep the fluids changed and don't abuse it, will last forever

I disagree with this statement simply because I've owned a Chevrolet transmission and a 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel. No amount of lubrication or pampering can supplant Bad engineering or substandard parts suppliers.

Luckily Toyota rarely releases Beta testers to the public.

People are recommending a transmission flush for your stick shift, so I'd take some of these replies with a grain of salt.

If someone knows how to drive a stick shift/ knows how a synchronizer works, checks the gear oil level once a year (transmission, transfer case and axles), and changes the transmission gear oil about every 50,000 miles, I think it should last 200k or more (barring any design flaws or abuse by previous owners).

I've had 5 vehicles with stick shifts and only had a problem with one, 1965 Mustang 6-cylinder 3-speed, it was just a weak design transmission. All the others were flawless over many many miles.

I've seen someone shove their stick shift into 2nd gear at 60+mph without a throttle blip... that kind of stuff makes me cringe. Just because something is tough doesn't mean it should be abused.

I've done a mod or two
Change the fluid and it will go indefinitely.

The inside of my case showed that the gear lube had been really low and really hot at some point before I bought it. It cooked to the case at a level at least 2" below the fill plug. That's likely why I had to clean out the part of the 5th gear bearing that turned into gray goo out of the gear.

Yep, good oil of proper level is everything. I'll probably go with a 30k interval on this now after the rebuild.

Early iron case 5spds. had wicked issues with bearings no exceptions. The early aluminum case 5 spds. had some problems with 5th gear but most any thing beyond that has been pretty flawless they will out last the truck. Toyota recommends 30K service many never get serviced and still last 200+K
