David K. is of course correct about "tanks" being imprecise. MPG is more accurate.

On the other hand I know people who really don't like to stop to fill up. Or have found a really price on gas at a certain station and like to fill up once a week when they don't have to make a special trip. Or for whatever reason are more concerned about how long a tank of gas will last them then they are strictly about mpg.

    Whatever floats your boat.

One thing I've been noticing lately is that my mileage is getting better. I just went 401.6 miles on my last tank burning 18.237 gal for 22.02 mpg. I mentioned earlier that I had been used to getting between about 20.5 and 21.5 mpg but lately I've been consistently at the upper end of that range or just a little bit better. I'm not driving any more carefully, and I still drive mostly in town or on secondary roads, with freeway miles making up the smallest part of my driving. Maybe at 43k miles I'm still breaking in my Tacoma (2011 Double Cab PreRunner, 2.7L, Auto).

I just changed my plugs, expecting a bump in mpg. 115k'ish miles. If toyota uses ngk plugs, these were the originals. If not, they were close to it. 2 of them had almost no electrode left, the 'best' 2 had worn to the point the gap was over 80 and the ground electrode was almost gone. Worst plugs, by far, I've ever pulled out of a running engine. First time I've felt a difference in how an engine runs with $10 in parts

Not at all... just that "tank" is so wrong to compare because it isn't a "tank" of gas you are measuring unless you run out and are towed to a gas pump! A tank is 21.1 gallons.

So that we are all comparing the same thing here, let's have a standard point of reference if you don't want to just give the MPG.

Do you fill up (top off) at the 1/4 Tank Line; the Low Fuel Light On; or the E Line? Do you really drive until the tank is empty?

1/4 Tank Line = 13 Gallons to fill
Low Fuel Light On = 17 Gallons to fill
    E Line = 18 Gallons to fill
Empty Tank = 21 Gallons to fill

Provided you are at a gas station right when the needle touches that point.

Listing the gallons to fill with the miles you drove (and not saying "tank") would be something everyone can relate to. A "tank" is not a standard unit of measure.

Personally, it isn't hard to divide the miles by the gallons and just post a MPG figure.

I often go 270-300 miles between fill ups, and I often fill up with about 17 gallons (when the light comes on). 270 / 17 = 15.9 MPG and 300 / 17 = 17.6 MPG.

Don't feel bad. I get 12mpg but I get like 500 smg (smiles per gallon)

It's a standard unit of measure for that particular vehicle and since everyone has one, it's an acceptable measure of comparison. If we want to be too nitpicky we should disallow mpg, not everyone drives in miles. And not everyone with the same truck as a 21+ gallon tank, mine has 15'ish. But we can all relate to what a 'tank' of gas is, being this isn't a scientific study its acceptable. If the topic is mpg, it needs to be so but if the topic is range, mpg only works if you want every person to do the math. For this topic "about 250 miles" works fine. No matter what everyones driving style and conditions will effect the mpg or the range , so no matter what it's all a subjective answer.

18 is good for city. you're doing fine. it will get better when you have more miles on it too.

That's how the EPA defines it.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=34699

"Range on a tank and refueling costs assume 100% of fuel in tank will be used before refueling."

Yes, the government has a definition for what constitutes a "tank" of gas.

Naturally it's not what anybody in the real world means when they toss the term around because nobody except the government would deliberately run out of gas.

Damn 27-29? I say "26" and people get their panties in a bunch.
That is great, even for a 2.7L. At what speed is this, P?

Buy a civic? Bed covers I believe just add weight.

I'm getting 19ish mpg as of the last tank. Not too bad considering I'm undergeared, boy can I feel that I'm undergeared.

A bed cover will help a little on highway. No effect city. It's weight is negligible. I run synthetic oil for my engine's sake but I saw no effect on the MPG.

I have a 2.5" lift, Low rolling resistance H/T tires, and at 60 MPH can hit about 26-28 MPG highway. City, not much you can do. If you REALLY got into it, you can add panels to make the truck drag less at high speeds. For example, a plastic undercarriage sheet.

I have a 2.7 gen 1 4X4 and I get 20 pretty much no matter what I do. Unless I spend a few hours driving around on dirt roads in 4lo. Then it drops down to about 17 but that makes sense.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
This, 220 would be a dream for me right now with the crappy winter gas and being in 4wd more often! I am lucky to see 200 per tank on my double cab, you 4 banger guys shouldn't be complaining haha.
