I just bought a '10 2.7 that came with a K&N and my buddy who owns a salvage yard advised me to go back to stock. I should at least clean the MAF and Throttle body, but I don't like the idea of the grit getting in that motor! He's a pretty smart guy, but I'd like to get the opinion of yous guys! How hard is maintenance on a K&N? What do I need?

Go back to stock. If you have a hard time finding a stock intake at least get a dry filter like an AFE.

I've ran K&N and other oiled filters since the day I got a car. Never once had issues with too much oil, because I don't over oil it.

If you follow the directions right they won't do damage. People who have had issues over oiled it, clogged their MAF and now blame the product for their mistake.

If you don't want to deal with oil, AFE dry filter is the way to go.

same here, never once had a problem running k&n. Paper filters will filter a bit better though.

I had problems after 10k running it in my STI, it came stock out of the box and I never oiled it (maybe it was just not my lucky day)

Luckily, my state does nothing of the sort. You can drive ATV's on public roads here. Basically, if you can bolt a license plate to it, you can drive it on public roads. So I will just clean and maintain mine unless I see a crazy deal on a stock setup on ebay or something. Lots of dusty gravel roads here.

my tacos had one on for that long and no issues, but I won't run k&n on my duramax. They let to much dirt through for turbo/boosted applications imo, however I am running a diesel specific oiled cotton type filter which is pretty much the same but has twice the number of layers to filter out finer particles. Its been on for about 5 years and zero issues.

There are a lot of K&N haters here...

I've owned a couple different K&N's over the years. If you keep them cleaned, don't over-oil them, and they're seated properly...you shouldn't have any problems. I never had problems in the 5 years I had one in my 96.

I cleaned it twice a year - regardless of how clean it looked.

Not a hater, I just don't see the point of them. I guess maybe if you want to hear intake noise, which I don't.

What the heck is wrong with a high quality paper filter? ?? Been using them since day one without a problem.

The only times i hear about a problem is with the oil filters.

Paper. I had a K&N on my '95 Runner. It wasn't worth the hassle. Messy, dirty, the wire mesh started to fray, and I really didn't notice a heck of a lot better performance or mileage. I just run a quality paper and change it more often than factory reccomendation.

I had heard the same. Someone tested K&N vs. paper. Paper did a better job at filtering. Not lots better, but measurably better. I'm going to be putting lots of miles on my little Taco, I want the best filtering I can get so I'm staying with paper. If you are racing and care only about airflow, go with K&N.

    Excellent point. I'm with you.

When I need to drive only 1,000 miles and then tear down my engine, they will be at the top of my list.

That is not true, only Californistan has the F'd up CARB labeling requirements and it has nothing to do with actual "smog " inspection. In CA the visual inspection is where it will hit you if the product is not CARB certified and currently only Airaid and the TRD intakes are CARB. Technically a shit load of aftermarket intake and exhaust products will pass smog sniff testing without any problem at all but CA as of January 2014 no longer smog sniffs it is now an ODBII reading and visual inspection only. It is a fkn scam to get companies to pay the state hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their product CARB certified.
