Thinking of towing a ford focus about 500 miles on a tow dolly with my 2015 Tacoma prerunner 2wd automatic 4 cylinder. Anyone ever done something like this? might be totally crazy, input please. They seem to weigh about 2700 lbs. on internet search.

    Can it be done? Probably
    Is it safe? Probably not
    Is it crazy? Definitely yes.

You'll be fine. Just give yourself more room than you think you'll need to stop, keep it at a safe speed and avoid rapid lane changes.

I towed a 280z on a tow dolly from Indiana to NJ with a 2013 4cyl/auto. No problems. Leave it in 3rd instead of overdrive.

I would do it with my 5sp without hesitating.
The only concern for me would be brakes.
You probably want to think about auto transfer temperature as well.
Flat highway shouldn't be a problem. Stop and go or hills may heat it up.
Do you have a transmission oil cooler?

No issue. 3rd instead of drive like mentioned above. Braking will be fine, just plan ahead. The oil cooler would be a good idea if this is going to be a common thing but if it's just this once, I wouldn't worry.

Why is this crazy? Most Focus' are 2800lbs or so, that leaves you 700lbs for the dolly and you are still within the tow rating. no problems at all.

Thanks for the input. I think I will keep speed down, 3rd not overdrive. Take my time.

I also pondered how well my little 5 lugger would pull and considering the towing capacity it does pretty good. I had to pull a 10 foot enclosed trailer across the state once and it was only bad because I was using a bumper ball and the nose of the trailer was so high I had fight the headwind all the way home.....This is why I have a new hitch receiver sitting in my living room right now. I have also strap pulled a 63 International pickup across town up hill with no issue.

As it has been said here already its all about gearing. Drive it like a big rig, use the gears to slow you down and work the trans rather the motor.

Exactly like most said, it could be done and still within being safe. Our limit is 3500 on our 2.7, but I've towed my brother's pickup home before. Just got to know how to drive safely.
