I've done 2 oil changes on my '09 2.7....warm oil and 10 minutes drain time. Both times 5.5 qts put it right on the money. With nearly every car/truck I've owned a 1/2 quart less than the actual capacity seem to put the level where it was needed....at least by the dipstick anyway.

every other car i've ever owned took exactly what the manual says and what the full line on the dipstick says...they were the same amount even on my old 1988 toyota truck...so this is screwed up big time

5.5 quarts does it for my truck also. It a lot easier to add a 1/4 qt. than to take it out. Pretty sure the 6.1 is for a dry fill, after a engine teardown or a new engine.

Not to beat this in the ground, but i usually put in 5qts, start the engine and fill accordingly as Toyota states. My problem with this dipstick is that even after cleaning off the oil, when i re-insert the stick, pull it back out, i always have oil residue way up the stick?...
It's very difficult to accurately measure the oil level. I use Mobil 1.

Oh, and this is my first post. Hello and thanks for all the good information.

    Welcome Paul!!

Yeah, these dipsticks suck. I've been so tempted to look for an aftermarket 'something' but I just haven't had the time.

Paul, even after mine sits all night it still has residue from the dipstick tube. But on mine the other side is usually clean and reads correctly.

A 2008 2.7 uses 6.1 quarts. However, the dipstick will show full at about 5.5, so you probably need to add some.

for the 4x4 or prerunner the oil capacity says its lower. take a look in the manual. but its werid cause it under the 4.0

it surpases the full dot on the dipstick by alot with 5 quarts

That is incorrect, bud. The owners manual clearly states 6.1 qts. The oil capacity does not differ from 4x4 to pre-runner. Make sure you are not looking at imperial qts. or some other measurement. The 2.7 engine is the same regardless of pre-runner, 4x4, or base-model, hence the same oil capacity.

Its up to you, but I usually fill it up with 5.5qts, start it up and let it run for about 30 seconds, then i'll turn it off and let it sit for a couple minutes. I then check the dip stick and fill as needed.

keep in mind that if you don't completely drain the pan, you could be overfilling if you're adding the spec'd amount per the manual. make sure you're on a level surface or on a slight decline towards the drain bolt to ensure full drainage. also make sure you're on a level surface when reading the dipstick. my oil level was almost a half-inch above the full mark the day I brought it home from the dealer.

I called the service department in San Jose, CA today because I put 6 qts of oil in my 2.7L 2012 Tacoma a few days ago only to measure a quart over on the dipstick the next day when cold. The mechanic I spoke with said the same thing as the Toyota reply via email on post #75

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/4-cylinder/38422-dip-stick-4.html

He said to put in 5 qts and then go by the dipstick for additional fill. He told me the owners manual is giving information on the initial fill for a completely dry engine and some oil always remains in the 2.7L.

In 40 years of mechanical work I've never seen any discrepancy like this in an owners manual for an engine that Toyota uses all over the world and for many years. I drained a quart out. It's hard to believe the inadequate information given in the manual but I'm clear now. It makes perfect logical sense that the dipstick is the bottom line on an engine with this history though.

Holy old thread revival Batman! :p

Has anyone added ONLY 5qt with a new filter, run the engine, and checked the level? I am extremely curious what the level was.

Besides the thread from the dead.... Wow.

Im amazed at the number of people so concerned with having the exact by the books amount of fluid in the engine. I must be the only person that wants a level somewhere between the 2 dots and thats it. Its not an f1 engine, as long as their is oil in it, your fine.

100% agreed. The area between the marks indicates a "safe" level. It's not any more safe at the F mark than it is anywhere between the marks.

I know this is a old thread but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. From day one of owning my truck the oil level has been above the full mark, and I have put all the miles on the odo. When I took it in for the first couple free oil fills the tech told me "yes" it was high but not a problem. Started doing my own oil changes and when going by the book the oil is above the line. It really concerned me but at 25000 miles I have seen no ill effects and after doing some research I'm not sure how well I can even trust the dipstick to begin with. On the next change I will put in the 5 qts. To start but it really pisses me off frankly how much the stick smears. Most likely I will throw in what the book calls for and slam the hood.
