I read the other threads about the speedometer discrepancy and believe I am corrected, but see if you agree.

There is a lot of construction on the trip and the radar signs that display your MPH are within 2/3 miles per hour of what my speedometer registers at that speed. So when i say i am going 65, to adjust, my actual speedometer registers just over 65, like a bump or two on cruise control, as it takes takes 4 bumps of the CC to move my needle up 5 mph. 65 + 4 bumps gets me 70 - 71mph on the speedometer depending on how close to 65 i originally set it at. My numbers are using the corrected MPH. So when i say i was going 65, my speedometer actually reads 67-68. Close enough for me without a scangauge, or complex math :)...

Also, when i use mapquest or internet mapping of the distance of my route, and compare to the odometer it is almost dead on, like within a mile or two destination to destination, so if i fill up to the top, like as much as possible, on departure and when i arrive at the closest Shell gas station to destination and fill up again to top, that is how i came up with fuel consumption. divide mileage by fuel consumption = MPG.

don't ask me how the speedometer can be off but the odometer is damn near correct as i don't know how that can happen. But i used to make this trip with my old (98) tacoma and the distance mileage was the same.

Not saying you're wrong but, I checked against the highway markers, .4 for every 10 miles, GPS says exactly the same, and my scangauge jives 100% with my GPS for distance covered. We also have a different gauge in Canada, KMs. That could explain the differance partially.

Prerunner, 4.10 axle, stock tires, manual trans, unadjusted for what seems to be the same speedo error discussed above and elsewhere. My second tank checked out at 20.86 in mixed, sometimes leadfooted driving. The third tank looks like it might be a little weaker, will find out soon....

Third tank, more highway at 75+ mph some of it, and some lugging on a twisty two lane in 4th and 5th: 21.92. Just under 1200 miles, getting used to it, etc.....

I just figured my mileage for the first time since deleting the secondary air filter and switching to the aFe pro dry s drop-in.

Two tanks were filled to the filler cap at the same pump.

A/C was used sparingly, maximum speed 75 mph (corrected).

All numbers were rounded up to the nearest one/tenth.

    Results:

919.7 (adjusted to 95.5% of the 963 showing on the trip odometer) mixed hwy/city miles on 39.7 gallons of gas = 23.2 mpg

Definitely better than I had anticipated...

I just bought an 05 4cyl Prerunner Reg cab 5 spd. The first two tanks showed right around 20mpg. This was 70% + city driving with the air on constantly and I was *ahem* getting a feel for the trucks power pretty often.

This was 1-2 mpg less than I had hoped for, but It has some nasty 265/70/16 "Pathfinder Sport" tires on the stock steelies. These are going soon. I am hoping to get the wheel/tire combo down to around 50lb with some konigs and 245 michelins. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was in the high 60lb range now.

I will report back with any updates.

any of you with a 4x4 access cab... if you have a newer truck, do you think the 4cyl has enough power? does it lag on hills? do you have to downshift on hills?

    Just purchased a 2010 access cab 4x4 4 cyl.

Averaged 21.7 mpg on the first tank. Pretty happy with that combined about 50/50 city highway, and running 87 E10 gas. Hate the E10 but that's what we've got here in New England. Not bad considering I'm still learning what this engine/tranny combo "likes". :)

Regarding the power. Yes, I think the power is adequit. Finding that I need to make adjustments in what gear I choose though.

My previous vehicle was a Subaru Legecy GT Turbo Wagon, 5 speed manual, which had BAGS of power on demand at any time, and also could pull from 30 mph in 5th gear with no problems.

I have found that keeping the Tocoma in the 23000-2700 RPM range is the sweet spot (any others feel the same ?) which requires being a gear or two back from where I would have been with my previous vehicle. So say 3rd gear at 30 MPH instead of 5th. Tried fourth at this speed, and the engine feels like it's lugging.

Downshifting on hills would depend on the speed and gear I was in on the flat. On the highway, no haven't found downshifting to be neccessary in the 70-75 MPH range. Seems to pull just fine, although I wouldn't call it a powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination. Seems to be about what I would expect out of an enging/vehicle combo of it's size and weitgh and HP.

I have one 4 x4 Access and I find the truck seems way underpowered. I had a 1988 with the 2.4 engine and it seemed more powerful than my 1997 with the 2.4, which it seemed more powerful than my '09 with a 2.7. It was more important to me to get better mileage so I did not get the V6.
Just seems like the carbureted 1988 2.4 engine had a lot of grunt down low in the rpm range.

I can't imagine my '09 towing, but I will see. My right hand will be a blur downshifting.
