Mysterious Piece

Ok so I have a 2002 Prerunner sr5 and I was wondering what is that little black handle that is located by the bottom right of the steering wheel. Im not sure if this is a parking brake, because the ones I see on trucks usually say "Parking Brake". I also mud better if I pull this thing. From what I have read, rear lockers are activated by a button so I know it isnt a locker. Please dont flame me or anything, Im only 17 and I am only trying to increase my knowledge about trucks.

I can see how it could help him get thru mud better. An old trick to use, for trucks with an open diff, is to preload the brakes using the parking brake. This helps BOTH tires get power, thus better traction. AND in mud, it will keep mud from getting between the brake shoes.

Thanks for the info and not being an ass man. Some people just dont know how to read. Saying that it helps me mud means that I have tried it and it actually works better for me versus not using it.

Granted a pretty basic, yet still valid question. I would recommend that you get the owners manual out and read through it, there might be some other stuff in there that you might find interesting.

No. It WILL wear out your rear brakes a bit faster, but it wont hurt anything. As long as they are not fully applied when you are doing this.

So like pull it half way is what you mean? Or just apply them every now and then?

You shouldnt keep them applied for long distances, as they can over heat. Just put a little tension on the brakes when you need it. In time, you will become skilled enough to apply as traction lessens, then disengage when your momentum is up.

I see, well I have stock tires, Goodyear A/T Trackers, right now and I just wanted to know if I even need to use the parking brake technique. Also will just buying new tires be better off for my 2wd?

Sounds like a lot like your basics of VSC and Traction Control to me.

BTW, you should use it when parking the truck as well.

Tires make the largest difference when off roading.

Well buying new tires for what kind of wheeling do you do? If mud then Yes, I had BFG a/t at one time sucks in mud but grips on hard pack and soft dirt very well. I now have Toyo MT, Great in mud but SUCKS on hard and soft dirt. It doesn't "bite" like the A/T's did.
